Okay-- so it's okay for people on the Left here to take political pot shots, but not okay for those of us on the Right to respond? This is your definition of "no political talk"?

I don't see a problem with people on the forum taking jabs at the administration or at Conservatives-- but it seems like anytime somebody on the Right responds-- it's "Oh, you need to stop now. You're talking politics. No politics here."

I think we need a separate forum called, "The Vast Right Wing Monger Conspiracy".

GWB is the anti-Christ. Having said that, I am more often than not in agreeance with the right wing.

Now, as far as the price of gas here in Central Illinois. It is down to $2.99 in most places.

To add a bit more levity to this, I saw a bumper sticker a few months ago that read "Nuke gay whales for Jesus!" Wile Coyote

Rolex,

Admittedly its a fine line and perhaps that is reason enough to avoid any sort of political reference altogether, but I think a distinction can be drawn for arguing against the particular policy of one side or the other and throwing about derogatory labels against those who support policies that you happen to disagree with. The term Liberal once just meant a relative position on the political spectrum, but "knee-jerk" :P rightwingers have turned it into a term of derision. When someone criticizes the current administration they are merely exercising their constitutional right to free expression. You may take that as a personal insult, but it is not intended that way, just a difference of opinion. When somebody here hurls about labels that could reasonably seen as applying to other members, that is getting personal and stepping over the line.

Our country is more polarized now than at any time in our lifetime. You either love or hate Bush. There is usually no in between. Bush himself is largely responsible for this. When he was first elected (or should I say installed in office by Judges that were nominated by past Republican Presidents), he refused to see his "victory" for what it was, tainted at best. At the very least, he clearly lost the popular vote, but instead of recognizing more citizens voted for the so-called "Liberals" than voted for him and adopting the more moderate postions of Republicans like John McCain to help heal the wounds of the campaign battles and bridge the divide, he somehow took it as a mandate to advance the conservative agenda of the right wing of the Republican Party. Last year he won the presidential election (for the first time) but again by a very slim percentage of votes, and yet he again twisted that to somehow mean he had earned "political capital which he was going to spend". So you'll have to forgive us long ignored and derided "Liberals" from getting some satisfaction when the rest of the country (now 60%) finally is starting to recognize that the emperor hasn't been wearing any clothes. You don't see Dubya crowing about any political capital now, do you?

Rolex,

Hardly. If you take a careful view of what is sanctioned here and what is "censored," nearly the only time political comments are pointed out is when they come from the left. For a perfect example, the thread trashing feminist professors was very popular; try to critique right wing thinkers in the same manner, and see what happens. Read the rules-nuff said.

Prolijo, great post by the way. I wish I had more time/inclination to be as comprehensive as you.

Psychman,
Comprehensive? Hardly. I didn't even mention the great divide that Republican policies, particularly the tax cut, have caused between the rich and the poor in this country, which statisticly speaking is at its greatest amount since the Great Depression (as measured by the Lorenz Curve). Bush likes to boast about the 1 million new jobs that were created during his campaign, but conveniently forgets about the t million jobs that were lost during the first 3 years he was in office or the fact that most of the new jobs are lower paying service sector jobs (can you say Walmart and MacDonalds). This economic divide has come into glaring view with this recent disaster. Rich people could afford flood insurance, cars and gasoline to drive outside the city. Marriott hotel guests got evacuated on the first buses ahead of the mostly poor who had been camped out at the SuperDome.

Ah heck, you got me started again... you all get the picture.

Yes, of course you have a constitutional right to your opinion. But if you actually read the constitution, that right only applies to preventing the government from stopping you from criticizing it. Doesn't mean I can't criticize your criticisms. So... you're kinda throwing out non-sequiters, here.

[And I'm not quite sure why you brought this up in the first place. I think (I think?) we both enjoy the political joust-- and that's all it is. Two guys on the internet having fun. (Or that's all it should be, anyway)]

The problem witjh political discussion on this forum is that it's tolerated so long as it tows the Liberal line. Once a poster tries to counter with a Conservative response... we're muzzled and told, "Ah, ah, ah... no political discussion!"

By the way... if President Clinton didn't have a problem calling himself a Liberal-- and Hillary currently doesn't have a problem calling herself a Liberal-- then I don't know how you could in ANY WAY twist that into me engaging in "name calling"???

But I apologize if Liberal is now a bad word. I should have called you a "Progressive" I guess.

I just don't understand all this P.C. crap.

Now, if I'd called you a knee-jerk BLEEDING HEART liberal, a tea sipper or a patty-cake player, a useless hippie pothead, a commie pinko leftist, a bunny-huggers, a pillow-biter or a butt pirate... then I could see your point.

But I didn't... did I?

Times have changed in the past thirty years, Tomash. We Republicans no longer swill sherry and screw goats for fun anymore. I'd love to help you out, but we're cutting into my nap time as it is.

-Rolex.

In Costa Rica, I am paying the equilivent of .80 cents (US) per liter or appox. 3.20 (US) per gallon for regular. In light of recent events in the Gulf states, I was wondering how much you are paying in Calif., NY, Tex, ect. Please respond with what you are paying per gallon in US funds.

Just in case anyone forgot the original post.

Talk about hijacking a thread

Not a political animal, not liberal or conservative. Not blue or red. Spent 25 years in Florida registered as NPA (no party affiliation), voted every election swayed by my mind not some party loyalty.

My conclusion...politicians are politicians and they do not give a dam about you or me. they will say anything, run absolutely untruthful TV ads, lie with a smile to be reelected.

Am I cynical :?: You be the judge

Gas prices are getting out of hand here, just like other places I'm sure.

In New York, prices have reached $4 for regular at some stations, mostly in higher class areas. The avg price is about $3.20 I think. At my station, I paid $2.79 on Tue or Wed last week. It has been increasing pretty much every day. I was out of town this weekend, I came back to find it at $3.29 now for regular. It's nuts.

Hey, I don't think that any posts on a monger board are going to change anyone's mind about their individual politics.

We're all pretty much the product of our life experiences, and that isn't changed very easily.

As for myself..... I've been poor. It sucks. I like having money much better. The honest way to get from one place to the other is work hard, play by the rules, and get an education (at night if you have to). To follow this path, you will have to suck it up and do some unpleasant things. You will have to make hard choices about how you spend your time. When you're finally through that gauntlet, you may likely look at the world from a conservative point of view. Can't help that - it's what worked for me. My old amigos that didn't want to toe the line or work hard are still liberals. It's what works for them.

To those of you that have followed different paths, you have your beliefs and are entitled to them.

The young man who jumped into an abandoned school bus in New Orleans last week and arrived at the Astrodome with a load of refugees hours before the official evacuees? He's probably a budding conservative, at least in spirit. The liberals were still waiting at the Superdome for the government to come to their rescue.

Underdog, I'm sending you to the penalty box for that one. Although I'm more right than left, I don't think those generalizations are fair. Just MHO. :-)

BTW... I paid $2.99/gallon this morning in Cent. Ill.
