I have never been to Medellin/Colombia so I do need to do some further research but in terms of overall safety would it be similar to San Jose? Like mentioned above, I really wouldn't be leaving the grounds of the hotel much at all, and certainly never at night, but even just moving about outside I have to frequently remind myself of how much of a potential sitting duck or target I could be if anyone wanted to harass me.
As mentioned previously you would probably want to stay in one of the first floor rooms at the Mansion so you wouldn’t have to deal with the steps up to the other rooms. As far as going outside, the area the Mansion is in is pretty hilly so it might prove difficult for you even to go the relatively short distance from Avenida Poblado up to the Mansion.
The area around the Mansion is quite busy and pretty safe, especially in the daytime. Plus there will be other guys staying who would no doubt be happy to go out with you, so it would lessen any chance of you becoming a target. Sounds like your mobility issues would most likely be the limiting factor in anything you might want to do outside of the hotel.
Keep in mind that taxis are ubiquitous and cheap, so you could certainly take a cab somewhere and back and minimize how much you would have to walk. I think the bottom line is not to overthink things. Even if you just stay at the Mansion and keep to the pool area and your room you’ll still have a good time no doubt.
Once you get there you can play it by ear and decide on the fly what makes sense for you once you get the lay of the land. Best thing is to just get down there and not worry about things. It will all work out and if you’re like the majority you’ll be kicking yourself in the ass for not doing it sooner. Have a great time!
