Split up from the wife in July 2018. My buddy invited me to come down and relax (he'd hoped the wife and I were just having a serious spat - he was wrong). I stayed a month that first visit. Went to SL and DR almost every night. Met a super cool Tica my last week there. Also filed for divorce while on that first visit.

I had to go back to USA to take care of some business but 2 weeks later I was back in CR and all tied up with the Tica I had met that last week. Spent another month there playing house with said Tica. Had to go back to the USA to take care of some more business. Came back another 2 weeks later and played even more house with said Tica. Got into a huge fight with her (found out she had some serious personal issues). Left for USA after said fight.

Kissed and made up over WhatsApp with said Tica while I was back in USA. Returned to CR for another two weeks to play house once again. Forgot said Tica was still crazy. Left again for USA after 2nd fight.

Kissed and made up (again) over WhatsApp with said crazy Tica. Returned to CR for another two weeks hoping 3rd time was a charm. It wasn't. Left her for good this time but didn't scratch moving to CR off my list.

Been thinking about how to GTFO of current job, living situation, stress, etc. and have developed an 18 month plan. Been working out a budget with my fellow monger (he's been going to CR for the past 10 years, so I trust his insight). Been reading the forum here. I'm 90% sure I don't want to live in SJ. About 50% sure I want to live in Heredia. About 30% sure I want to live in Alajuela. Remaining surety percentages are reserved for living in Guanacaste province, Jaco, or even Limon.

Two to five year plan after arriving in CR is to find a fully self-sustaining (i.e. employed, living alone) full-time Tica gf. While I like the mongering as much as any other mongerer, I think I'm more of a one-on-one type of a guy (at least I think I am having only visited CR for roughly 16 weeks in 2018). This last paragraph may be entirely premature given the fact that I haven't visited neighboring countries, Columbia, Cuba, etc. yet. Hence the five year plan.

Anyway, despite having dropped a lot of money playing house with a crazy woman, I'm still hellbent on living the pura vida life in about 18 months. Lots of questions for those who have lived in-country for years, but I'll save that for the appropriate forum (imagine that)

p.s. Divorce was final this month :D

Whoa, whoa, whoa,
Slow down take a deep breath, get your shit together, mentally and physically, if you can't swim don't jump off the deep end. Take your your time. Have you ever been in a situation like this ? Prolly not, take some time for your self, reevaluate what's important to you. K*ds, ex, so many questions, so little time. Don't do it with a shotgun effect, it won't be pretty.

I've been living in Colombia for 8 years, and with the same Colombiana for 11. 15 years ago, I was thinking of living in CR until I found something better. Take your time, get to know the country, explore and forget about getting another wife for awhile. Life is too short... try enjoying it alone for a while. BTW, if I had to live in CR, I probably would choose Perez Zeledon. It's on the west coast and a heck of lot cheaper than San Jose.

Try living in CR for 3 - 6 months. It's a lot easier to be an ex-pat if you have income coming in from somewhere else. Becoming a happy, contented ex-pat requires a lot of prior planning... even then, there will be a few things you didn't think of.

Interesting read thanks for sharing. The collective masses are screaming stop, think, don't do it.

And yet we're all doing as we individually please so damn the torpedoes.

Keep us posted of said plans and developments and buena suerte.

if you must do this then rent don't buy
the streets of CR are littered w well intentioned men that landed face first in the calles
do yourself a favor and get some perspective on the situation
remember if you buy something and choose to wife up these little darlings can quickly become co owners of your property
and believe it everyone of them know exactly how the system works

You're 100% correct 911. My K*ds are grown. My ex is a Filipina. Met her in a bar in the Philippines (yes, I might be THAT guy). It lasted 29 years so I wasn't 100% THAT guy. I know how the bar girl/scene works and honestly I got luck with my ex. She coulda took me for everything right off the bat, but apparently she actually loved me and wanted a new life (rare thing, I know). Anyway, that relationship was doomed right from the beginning because I got married when I really just wanted to monger around, which I did for the next 29 years. lol

I'm hoping an 18 month plan will give me the time, physique, and finances to get my shit together. If those 18 months go well, then I'll enter CR with close to $100k in savings, a steady income of $2500+ a month, international healthcare coverage, etc. From reading on these boards and talking to others, that's a good start. Keeping my fingers crossed of course

Thank you for the advice Diablo. I fully intend on renting for the first 2 to 5 years so I can figure out where I want to live. Heck, I'm going to try to get the shortest rental agreement right off the bat. If I can go month to month, that might be best, but I'd settle for a 6 month agreement. Think that's smart?

I agree that wife'ing up puts me in the exact same scenario as women in the states (they too know how to work the system). I'm hoping by the time I've been there 2 to 5 years I'll have gained enough perspective to know IF I want to wife up or continue mongering or join the priesthood. lol

Thanks again for the advice :)

Thanks for the advice BlueDevil. I'll have a steady income of about $2500+, plus international medical insurance, and about $100k in the bank. After 5 years, that bumps up to about $3k a month and after another 7 years, that bumps up to about $3500 a month. I believe that'll be enough if I don't want to live like an American while I'm there. I spent years visiting and living in the Philippines so I'm familiar with cold showers, hand-washing my own clothes, etc. Of course I'll take hot water if the apartment has it, but I'm prepared to suck it up like I used to do when I was much younger.

I'm hoping the 18 months of planning and especially the 2 to 5 years living there before doing anything more serious will give me perspective on the whole situation. Who knows, I might end up ultimately in Columbia and that might be okay. Besides my own personal experience in CR in 2018, which despite the crazy Tica, was very nice (I traveled a lot while I was there), I've read a lot about CR being in the top 3 happiest places to live, having the 4th highest "livability" index, etc. Columbia was right up there too. Columbia is on my list of places to visit when I have to leave the country after 90 days before I can re-enter. Maybe visiting there will change my mind completely about living in CR and I'm open to that.

Thanks again for the advice. I appreciate it :)

Roger that. Will do! But...are you saying there aren't professional Ticas with their own money, apartments/homes, with grown Ch*ldren? I don't mind if they have K*ds at home IF we click, but prefer not to have to deal with teenagers again. Especially ones that aren't mine.

Yes, there are. But you may find yourself supporting their grown K*ds. Mi amiga (name redacted) is a wonderful, hard-working woman (who 'works' part time when she needs to) and she's supporting a wasteral son.

To Tica moms, their hijos are little angels that they coddle forever.
