Uber says no. And that has nothing with the strike.

Significant protests in San Jose today. Travel from the airport to downtown is affected. Our car service is concerned for incoming guests being able to reach their hotels.

Besides protests (riots according to CRhoy.com) at the Legislative Assembly, there was looting in Limon, roadblock in San Pedro, etc.

Expect problems. Be surprised if there aren't.

The strike is not disappearing.

The state (public) universities are marching today from UCR to the Casa Presidential in protest of alledged entry by the Fuerza Publica (Public Force) on UCR property during the removal of "barricades" manned by protestors (including some UCR students) in San Pedro yesterday.

CRhoy.com is the best source but is unfortunately about 6-8 hours behind.

There was a mass demonstration in downtown San Jose yesterday. Looting (opportunistic) in Limon. And a small roadblock demonstration near the City Mall in Alajuala. Also a RECOPE employee tried to sabatoge a propane line in the tank farm in Limon.

The National Assemblymen ('congressmen') are calling for President Alvarado to stop hiding and come forth and show some cajones.

The frustration of having watched five successive presidential administrations kick this disaster down the road - plus public disatisfaction with the 'business as usual - (almost) no one goes to prison' response to the cemento scandal - plus public anger at huge government salaries and 'millionaire pensions'* - is high. Whether its enough to overcome Tico aversion to actually solving problems and 'pura vida'? Another story.

Its not going to be .0001% of the turmoil in Nicaragua. The country is still "safe" (as it ever was). 90% of the country is unaffected.

Just expect long travel times between the airport and centro - and basically anywhere. And avoid marches.

*Ironically the core strikers - the 'public employees' - are striking to preserve their high salaries, bonuses for showing up to work, and the stupid high 'millionaire pensions'. And these things infuriate most Ticos.

Our guest 'X', took 1 hour to get from SJO to Centro (including immigration).

Of course, the big strike action was the UCR sponsored student march on the Casa Presidential.

I arrived SJO @9:30pm. Called for a Uber.
The driver didn't speak English,so very hard for me to
Understand.
He said the main way was very busy so he took
A roundabout back way.
It ended up costing just as much a regular taxi would
Have cost.

There was a strike action on Route 27 today near the airport. Yesterday the student march on the Casa Presidente was the main action.

I arrived in San Jose on the 13th. traffic trying to get into the International Airport was more affected than those of us who were leaving the airport. However, there was significant traffic, traffic jams, blockades etc. as a result of the huelga. business for the Mongers is more or less as usual but you may find it more difficult to get in and around areas like the Del Rey. If you generally Get Around by walking then you won't have any trouble. It has taken me longer to take Ubers to my general destinations as a result of more traffic but it has not been a complete disaster or anything of that sort. I fly out on Monday and I will allow probably 2 to 3 more hours then I would have as far as getting to the airport early etc etc.

Today is Independence Day here in Costa Rica and last night the concerts and parades and whatnot had already started. today should be a very fun day and I hope the weather and everything permits us to go enjoy the celebration and watch the locals.

If you are planning to travel to Costa Rica soon it is my opinion that you can travel without reluctance providing you allow for a little inconvenience here or there. My apologies to any of you who have experienced other than what I have herein described.

This could be strike related or scam related, i posted on this a few weeks ago. Uber app will give the best route taking traffic patterns into effect so if the driver changes major course, likely a scam and your charge changes. I would challenge it just because, you can do it through the app if you use credit to pay

The strike had many sections of the highway blocked. I do not think your driver was scamming you at all. People were not able to get to the airport sometimes during the strikes. Some people had to get out and walk dragging their luggage to get to the airport to make their flights.
