The state (public) universities are marching today from UCR to the Casa Presidential in protest of alledged entry by the Fuerza Publica (Public Force) on UCR property during the removal of "barricades" manned by protestors (including some UCR students) in San Pedro yesterday.
CRhoy.com is the best source but is unfortunately about 6-8 hours behind.
There was a mass demonstration in downtown San Jose yesterday. Looting (opportunistic) in Limon. And a small roadblock demonstration near the City Mall in Alajuala. Also a RECOPE employee tried to sabatoge a propane line in the tank farm in Limon.
The National Assemblymen ('congressmen') are calling for President Alvarado to stop hiding and come forth and show some cajones.
The frustration of having watched five successive presidential administrations kick this disaster down the road - plus public disatisfaction with the 'business as usual - (almost) no one goes to prison' response to the cemento scandal - plus public anger at huge government salaries and 'millionaire pensions'* - is high. Whether its enough to overcome Tico aversion to actually solving problems and 'pura vida'? Another story.
Its not going to be .0001% of the turmoil in Nicaragua. The country is still "safe" (as it ever was). 90% of the country is unaffected.
Just expect long travel times between the airport and centro - and basically anywhere. And avoid marches.
*Ironically the core strikers - the 'public employees' - are striking to preserve their high salaries, bonuses for showing up to work, and the stupid high 'millionaire pensions'. And these things infuriate most Ticos.
