Jaco is definitely worth visiting for a few days out of your trip. If you are going to go all the way to Costa Rica, its great to get out to the coast. Jaco has some good restaurants/sodas and of course there is the scene at the Cocal. It's all about location there. Nice poolside bar etc. Like most the beaches in Costa Rica, Jaco beach is for surfing and the sand is coarse, so if you do go there, its more about experiencing the town and the activities around it. It does get really hot there, so be ready for that. Manuel Antonio is fantastic and has a couple of great swimming beaches inside the National Park (not the main playa). Feel free to PM me with any questions you have.
If you are going to be in SJ alone, you might be better off starting out at La Amistad, SL or Zona 2, so you can meet other CRT members in a friendly atmosphere and get some advice in person.
