Bashful, I am not someone who criticizes another person for how he operates, but I think many people, including me, are wondering why you carry that much cash and that much electronics on a short vacation.

In example, GDJ. I will be so loaded for the 2 week Memorial Day jaunt. My work laptop (which allows me to make billable hours while on vacation) is at least $500. I have a cell phone that cost me $200. I typically bring my US phone and leave it in the safe, but it is in the bag upon arrival, and the replacement value is $400. I may or may not bring a camera, depending upon what I have planned for a trip. I also carry a 8" tablet if I plan on visiting the novia in Cartago (pain in the ass to translate off of a cell phone screen).

A laptop, cell phone and tablet aren't out-of-scope for modern travelers. For me, it is the suitcase (checked or carry-on) that gives me the most trouble. If all I had was a normal daily-sized backpack, I'd use the bus. It isn't theft per se, but my own incompetence that worries me.

Also, if you fly in late, the bus isn't an option. I seldom carry colones on me upon arrival.

Oh, and as for the cash, I can burn 2k in less than a week if I am with my usual wingmen. I do not trust debit cards, and prefer to bring USD.

As for me, I'll keep calling my trusty driver of 7 years and happily handing him the "Oh my God! Exorbitant! Wasteful! 1/2 of a session! 20 times the bus cost!" fee.

that's about what, 10-15 dollars? I can't get a cab ride for that cheap. So unless yer buddy's willing to pick me up for the same fare, this isn't much of an option for me.

Soooo, I land on a Saturday night at 9pm. Haven't booked a hotel yet( and it's only a few days away). Just spending the one night in San Jose. 2 questions?
1. Do I bother with the Del Rey arriving so late or just skip SJ fun that night? Oh, and where do I stay?(I want to sleep late without being woken)
2. Do I just hire a taxi or call PVT at this hour to get me to a hotel?
You guys are awesome with the info, I am loving this site!!
Thank you!!

Go Big or Go Home !!!
That time of night go straight to DR. Take a pair of ear plugs to knock out the sound of high heels in the hallway.

And guys have called me out for getting a thread off subject - the topic is cheapest way from SJO to downtown - not where to stay..........but I seldom mind the twists and turns a topic makes; sometimes the off topic posts are more interesting than the <original> subject at hand........

See, I don't care; its the nature of a message board - I just don't think when a topic goes off subject, its a big deal - some of you others do, or are looking for a bull shit way to call out someone else

Touché! My bad! Should have just pm'd someone, this kinda spiraled. Can't wait to get down there so I can do some reporting instead of asking a bunch of silly questions like I'm on my first camp sleepover. Thanks again for sharing, friends.

Yes, I called you out for taking the thread about collecting for the ex-employees of Scores off topic. Contrary to what you posted in that thread, there was not a question asked of you, and your name was not mentioned in the other post you said you were responding to.

But we can all see that you did not have any interest in helping those ex-employees.

You nailed him righteously, Bro GDJ. At least this Thread's "hijacking" was on a closely related subject, not a totally left-field, mean-spirited thingie.

I used the Tuasa bus on my last trip. I asked the guy I was standing with at the bus stop, who I thought was an American eco-tourist, if this was the bus for San Jose and if they take dollars. He said he didn't know, but said he only had dollars. We jumped on, and this particular bus driver accepted a dollar from both of us, the ride is not bad, but as posted above not recommended for a first trip or after nightfall.

The funny part of the bus trip was that the eco-tourist, ended up being a monger, a Cuba-Dave fan and CRT member. We found out we grew up in the same neighborhood back home, and I was the first person from back home he's met since moving to Texas 20 years ago, at a bus stop in Costa Rica.

funny story I enjoyed the bus ride you were great company

Hey Sanantonio didn't see you the rest of that trip, hope you had a smooth time travelling the country. I've been checking out TJ, Curacao and Aruba these couple years, but will be heading back to CR this year, hope to see you down there.
