Bashful, I am not someone who criticizes another person for how he operates, but I think many people, including me, are wondering why you carry that much cash and that much electronics on a short vacation.
In example, GDJ. I will be so loaded for the 2 week Memorial Day jaunt. My work laptop (which allows me to make billable hours while on vacation) is at least $500. I have a cell phone that cost me $200. I typically bring my US phone and leave it in the safe, but it is in the bag upon arrival, and the replacement value is $400. I may or may not bring a camera, depending upon what I have planned for a trip. I also carry a 8" tablet if I plan on visiting the novia in Cartago (pain in the ass to translate off of a cell phone screen).
A laptop, cell phone and tablet aren't out-of-scope for modern travelers. For me, it is the suitcase (checked or carry-on) that gives me the most trouble. If all I had was a normal daily-sized backpack, I'd use the bus. It isn't theft per se, but my own incompetence that worries me.
Also, if you fly in late, the bus isn't an option. I seldom carry colones on me upon arrival.
Oh, and as for the cash, I can burn 2k in less than a week if I am with my usual wingmen. I do not trust debit cards, and prefer to bring USD.
