Looks like we can revise the 18 month estimate down to less than a hour. Yes, the Del Rey could be smoke free by Christmas.

Pura Vida.

Not likely. La Presidencia has 6 months to sign the legislation but here is little doubt see will sign it in much less time. However, businesses then have1 year to be in compliance with the law.

Well I am an ex smoker but love my cigars, I will likely spend very little time in places I can't smoke them. I have always tried my best to be a polite cigar smoker but some can not be pleased ever. Speaking of dumb dumbs I IMHO believe they are those who buy into the never proven second hand smoke kills theory. I do think it may hurt people in small tight area's without ventilation but I have been in casinos that their systems are so good I could smoke a cigar five feet away from you and you wouldn't hardly know it.

Oh well always one way or the other why can we never compromise and leave it up to the business owners, Nothing wrong with hiring smokers the laws that exist are silly. In the states the amount of tax revenue that is being lost at an ever growing rate will have to be replaced by someone, maybe non smokers can finally pay some sin taxes on something

Man the first trip after this will be interesting I guess I had better start doing research my retirement is April 6th at 51 I am pretty damn happy and raring to go

Amen - boy are we in lock step on this issue (and likely a few others :) :) )

Obsevations:

*You can certainly make the "restraint of trade" arguement
*Offering a choice allows customers to make the choice, not government - many would never go into a "smoking" res't or bar and that's fine - their choice
*Gov LOVES collecting the taxes on tobacco
*The air cleaning technology exists today to allow both smokers and non to be accomodated
* According to Lew Rothman, head of JR Tobacco - One 747 flying NY to LA puts more pollution into the air than all the cigars smoked in that year
* Any organization opposing tobacco wants it totally banned and does not seek any accomodation with those who smoke
*I'm a cigar guy - and if you knew ( like Smelvis knows - and likely a few others ) how they are made, aged, et al (And how the vast majority of smokers use them - not inhaling, 1-2 a day - hell good ones are expensive - who can afford more than 2/day?)- and how they are a natural product; zero chemicals (unlike cigaretts) - and the art, science and history - well you might have a tad more sympathy (Yeah, I know - you still hate the way the damn things smell  :P :) )
*You might not want to eat out a cunt after a weeks period with no washing or douching - but others might and that should be their right

I'm not a huge "domino theory" guy - smoking bans have little or nothing to do with legal (or as ID once replied to me - not illegal prostitution in CR :) ) prostitution - however, every nanny state initive just takes a little of our freedoms away.

Yada, yada, yada...

Smoking bans are coming worldwide whether you agree or disagree. You can spin it anyway you want (freedom of choice, loss of tax revenue, other things are bigger polluters, etc.) but the fact is the majority of the population does not smoke and do not want to be subject to second hand smoke.

The majority of guys don't suck cocks, yet in most places (Like the USA) the practice is legal - so whats your point :?:  :P :P :P   :) Sorry, ID, Sorry   :P :)

In all seriousness :) I take your point and agree with you (surprised?) - plus no matter what guys like me - and Smelvis - think or say, we don't have a vote or a voice in what is going to happen.

However....

I post when the muse strikes me - and think I'm fairly articulate and my positions are thought out - agree or disagree.

Although I think my positions just posted make sense, no thinking person is going to disagree with what you wrote re the tide against indoor smoking. I just wish there could be a little accommodation.

Its a message board - and you have to admit, a discussion of ideas is far preferable to the board of a few short years ago when guys like Florida (rest his soul ) turned every board topic and discussion into an annoying "gay" debate on who was phucking Spanky or PacoLoco up the ass    :( .

Just seems like today, more info is being shared, and the level of discourse, if not more intelligent, at least less sophomoric, less like 8th grade humor, more like info being exchanged. And if this was a hijack vs a response to your post - sorry - nah, I'm not :)

Even though I usually hate the comparisons to other places, are there very many countries left that allow smoking in public places? As said before, I am square in the middle. Don't smoke anymore, but it doesn't bother me. Probably because I don't live in bars. Presidente Laura is following this thread closely and will take all posters into consideration before she decides whether or not to sign. :D

Leaving just two words out I will use the famous Rhett Butler phrase to express my opinion on this subject:

Frankly .. .... I don't give a dam.

Having been been a smoker and then an ex-smoker I think I can appreciate both sides. My point was/is that we can discuss this all we want and use all the rational or irrational points of discussion we wish to bring forth but the fact is the majority of adults in most countries neither smoke or support smoking.

Politicians who are ever keen to present themselves on the side of the majority when it will lead to votes will therefore slowly but surely outlaw smoking in public places worldwide.

Last I knew sodomy was not legal in some jurisdictions just as smoking in public places is NOT legal is some jurisdictions. :P :P

Yeah I agree that's not much help I put effort into it, if no where is secluded where I can lite up by myself I will ask those if they mind and also offer one to those around me. If that doesn't work I'll go find an outside place. But if I find a place by myself and someone come and sits next to me while they can see me smoking it's on them.

I will also simply be where I can smoke and if CR get that bad as you say NEXT!

Did you not see the word cigar. You don't inhale cigars thus the risk is greatly reduced and I am willing to assume those risks.

What I find amusing is a country that can't stop people from pissing on the sidewalks, drinking guaro in the parks and plazas, or smoking crack in public wants people to not smoke cigarettes in public places.. Pura vida at its finest.

Went to the office in Escazu yesterday and they have the signs up. Not only can't you smoke in the building, it is not allowed on the property. There is a sign that says you must exit the main gate to the property to light up.

Just a comment - I am amazed that the casino industry is just standing idly by

In FL some years back a smoking prohibition was passed - in fact its part of the FL Constitution - however....

You can smoke in any cigar shop, as well as any bar that allows it and gest 10% or less of thir revinue from food - so it would not surprise me to see some flixibility.

OTOH, I'll do what I do in Florida if its a total prohibition - not going to stop coming to CR :)
