Don't fret. I had no delusion you would 'get it'. You posted some typical 'ugly American' behavior in the public forum so my response was for the rest of the guys that do 'get it' and want to learn local customs.

Jazz, please re read my post and see if you think I was attacking the original poster.

We expect taxis to use accurate meters, take the shortest or fasted route, upon our instruction, not rob us, be there on time when we have a run to the airport etc but there is a flip side to this coin. We should be considerate toward them as well.

I did consider that the poster knows the scene and that furthers my point.

I will explain further in the hope to clear up any misunderstandings. If a taxi is sitting in traffic or on a road already headed toward traffic and you flag them, then you can get out any time you want and feel good about paying the meter. But if you instruct the taxi to drive into traffic and they are stuck there, by your instructions, then why shouldn't you pay them to the next exit point or at least split the difference. Again, One dollar, (500 colon) usually solves this. This can be the new game, "Lets strand the taxi".

1. And it is not a matter of the 'law'. Motorcycles and Mopeds do drive between lanes and on each side of the lane here. I have driven a large vehicle 20,000 miles in 6 years being extremely careful not to run them over. Not because it's the law that I don't run them over, but they are there and I can't change it so why shouldn't I take every effort not to run them over or swing open a door. I am a visitor in their country. "When in Rome". Isn't this just common sense? It is for people that live here and the girl he was with seemed to know that.

2. It is not correct to suddenly exit a taxi in traffic. You instruct him that you want out and allow him to pull to the the left or right or pull completely off the road.
If the OP had done this, then the taxi would have looked in his mirror for oncoming two wheeled vehicles, as we all do here, and this thread would not have been started.

You thought I was attacking the poster. I was simply explaining to the rest of the members how to avoid this and explaining local customs.

Him being a local biz man means nothing to me if he's an ass.

But the post in this thread remind me why I constantly overhear horror stories, whining, and sad tales of woe and poverty, while every thing I touch does very well.

I didn't read the last six or eight posts, I would have tipped the guy's and been happy I could leave as he couldn't Ticos are human and most are pretty cool people given the chance to prove it. Okay shutting up again :) The screaming Tica would have gotten cab fair after we were about a block away. Okay now really shutting up. :)

im just going to do as rascal says and everyone acknowledges and ignore the imbecile. oh wait i´m sorry everyone tells him he is so intelligent so he must be honarary mensa.
exactly smelvis. but i decided to let it play out and found that the guy on the moped was actually contrite and not wanting anything more than a no harm no foul.
the taxi driver would have loved to see me grab for my wallet and even though that wasn´t out of the question i was glad to see a confirmation of fairness.
was only trying to convey how quick a circumstance can change and to be on your toes.
i have had zero problems with locals and i think this is just one more case of taking a deep breath. no one asked for the situation and everyone came out ok so all good.

I don't know about "mensa", but it took me about 15 minutes into my first trip to San Jose in 2006 to see that motorcycles drive between and around the lanes.

I'm not the one that suddenly swings open vehicle doors, without looking in San Jose traffic.

Hmm. I guess that's what the guy that ran Pops over thought too.

Every day here I avoid motorcycles on the road. They are everywhere. If you pay attention, you won't have a "bad surprise".

Not so funny accident:

Here is an even better one. I guess the OP would give himself 10 points for this one.

Coulda gotten clipped or smacked around yesterday by a motorcycle if I hadn't been on my toes. They will find every crack and crevice in traffic to advance and will gun it if they see a big opening. In Texas, doing that shit will eventually get you t-boned with an open door.

Not local customs. Your customs. No local involved.

And alot of them are getting hit hard on a daily basis, including many mortalities as we all see in the Daily's. Talk to the cabbies who are on the road all day in SJ and ask their opinion about the cyclists, though I'm sure they have their opinions about cabbies.

Just last night we hopped in a cab leaving Chubbs and traffic was at a standstill for at least 20 minutes. The reason why? We saw it when we drove past the accident - some poor guy on a bicycle ended up under a bus. The cops we spoke to said he was alive but in pretty bad shape. I fear traffic more than criminals down here. The former is much more likely to kill me than the latter.
