Blending in doesn't necesarily mean looking like a Costa Rican. To me it just means not screaming tourist with cash by what you wear. Low key, but nice gets the job done. :D

While dressing down may not get you noticed from a mile away, no matter what you wear, they will know you are a tourist (or local gringo). In both cases, the assumption is that you have money.

I can't believe we are still on this subject. I mean seriously....... Orange has a point by saying you will never truely blend in here even if you change clothes. As I said before I have living here for over twelve years and downtown near or in the gulch it will not matter what you have on really. You are different in most cases. I say if you wanna wear shorts and t-shirts do it. Obviously you choice of clothes should be appropriate for what you are doing, but the general taboo of wearing shorts and sandals during the day in the TROPICS is not taboo at all. So sack it up and be you. If you are walking somewhere that you can be robbed it will not matter if you have on jeans and a button down shirt or shorts and tennis shoes. The only difference is which one you will be able to run away in faster. lol.......

Just my humble opinion....

Paco - Most will not know who/the thread to which you are refering! I do - who was the ahem, CRT "member" in question! It was a great thread!

Seriously, lots of good points made lately re blending in - Orange, Pax others are correct - most will not be mistaken for a tico, and thats really not the intent - if guys would dress a little more appropriately, whether walking on the street, or dining out, most of the problems would be solved ( a fish shirt, shorts, ugly sandles - just screams asshole) - if they acted better - oh wait - one issue at a time  :P

JULY 10 I posted about "blending in" as far as being mistaken for a tico I'm too tall ,maybe a cuban, :D it was my point that being less conspicious lessens you as target when walking around downtown particularly at night. I remember someone was robbed at knife point in front of the NY Bar several years ago? He was wearing a gold chain and hawian style shirt?
When I started travelling to CR about 20 years ago I was given a lot advise by my friend who lived down there, one bit of advise was "look how the men dress then you try and dress in the same manner, " don't stick out as a tourist. You'll be selected as a target for pickpockets ,,,robberies.
SO Far other then getting the gringo price I've been lucky as far as crime goes. However most of my friends have been victims of pickpockets and snatch and grabb type robberies, along with the police shake down.
Every one has the right to dress as they choose, I feel more comfortable following my deceased friends advise, he never lead me wrong.

Appearance does make a difference. Even if you are the whitest guy on the planet, 6'6" tall, it makes a difference. There is a big difference between being noticed and standing out. If someone is looking for a gringo, they'll find you, no matter what. But if someone is just casually observing, they might not spot you if you're 100 feet away wearing a regular shirt and jeans, vs. a straw hat, hawaiian shirt and shorts.

There's a guy down the street that owns a dull silver (maybe gray) ferrari 360. Several times i have not noticed it until he was right up on my bumper. But if it were ferrrari red :?: I'd spot it a mile away. But it's still a ferrari.

SR

That's my point. I will never be able to blend in and look like a local, but I can avoid sticking out like a sore thumb. Plus the longer I am here the darker my skin is getting (lots of sun when it's not raining).....

Want to try that in something approaching standard english :?:

I've read other posts you have made, and asked you before, nicely, where you are from - because you get somewhat of a pass if you are not a native english speaker; if its your 2nd language - but you have not answered - have no reason why not - do you want everyone to think you are just dopey :?:

(We have one Greengo - we truly don't need another)

I am gringo, but I never had one problem based on my appearance. Secret: I look less like an idiot than everyone around me. I remember one time specifically in Mexico, some dumb-ass decided to flaunt local customs and wear flowery bathing-suit shorts and a metallica t-shirt through customs. I went through in my usual grey while he had his head planted sideways on the table with a "what are you carrying? " officer in his face. On the plane later, I found out he was just a common tourist, not doing anything wrong. But the Rolex on his wrist caught my eye, nice invitation for a shake-down. Wear what you want -- pay the consequences.

Old parable: two guys in the forest see a bear, one starts panicking, the other sits down calmly and starts taking off his shoes and putting on running shoes. the first guy is like "you're not going to outrun that bear". the second guy smiles softly and says "i don't have to outrun the bear, i just have to outrun you". Bottom line, there are a lot of idiots and the police/criminals WILL find them. just be better than them and you are home free.

i love the guys that try to prove a point by wearing what they want. they are my front line of defense. :P

I agree with SRLM: always a low profile, it will increase your longevity. Let the roosters show off their plumage.

You need lots of schooling, Rob  :P

"Greengo" (not "gringo" you putz  ) is a very famous poster here on CRT known for his somewhat whimsical, inscrutable - sometimes weird and annoying - posts in often nothing approaching standard English. Do a search; he posts frequently.

PS While I love CR, I never claimed to be a tico - but I suspect you may be one, which is fine - you get a pass for the poor english; while I speak more Spanish than likely 90% of the board (I'm not close to fluent) , I respect and admire anyone who tackles English - and we don't discriminate on this board; all are welcome, even those who do not financially support the board

PS I have a better chance of seeing Jesus than you living in Manalapan   :P :)

The guys that never went to sunday school will never understand, flip flops and shorts are gay, (sorry Spanky), I wear slacks and a polo or dress shirt, or a nice Polo or something like it, alot of times a sport jacket also, there are times to CR I have worn jeans and Polo boots.

I want to get upgraded,..the nicer you dress the better the odds.

Whether I get upgraded or not, I have pride in my appearance.

Me too man. My family seems to think I'm hanging with druglords and moving tons of cocaine when I go down there. Not the case at all; totally wrong concept of Costa Rica. That's the brainwashing machine of America for you. Not to mention they can't even show me where Costa Rica is on a map. Their response: "I know where Mexico is." And when they do that stupid crap I wanna smack um. Family friends it makes no difference. I just wanna smack um for their stupidity!!!
