PVT,

So I guess a nice Chicken fried steak hanging over that 16" plate with cream gravy, yeast rolls and french fries is not on your wish list when you return to East Tx.? :P

Know how to hit a guy below the belt mi amigo...about my favorite thing in a good Texas restaurant. I would eat it and use meds to pay as small a price as possible later ;)

Amazing how my system has changed but overall, with the weight loss and vast diet change, know I'm much healthier now than first time you saw me in DFW, all fat and long hair!

On the other hand I've eaten at roaside dumps in Europe, US, Central America and Costa Rica with out a problem. Generalizing that tico run places are the pits is plain ignorant.

Plus one, but ignorant is about the mildest word I would have used.

Thanks ID...good find! Translating the high points for the amusement of the brotherhood...
1) Workers remodeling the kitchen area did not have any barriers between the construction and the food prep areas resulting in filth (especially dust) on walls, floors and food prep surfaces.
2) The construction people use same spaces as kitchen staff, risking contamination.
3) Holes in the floor, roof and walls
4) Many of the surfaces are not washable or can not be sanitized.
5) Standing water in many areas, including the bakery part.
6) There are refrigerators in the construction area with no separation from workers or materials, just enough space to open the doors.
7) Found food refrigerators where they had raw food, cooked food and other things all mixed together, risking contamination.
8- Trash cans in the kitchen don't have foot-operated lids, risking contamination.
9) Found vegetables in direct contact with the floor, risking contamination.
10) Found the metal serving trays just sitting on the floor, risking contamination.
11) Not following proper food prep laws for example one worker was preparing food wearing earrings.
12) The area where they keep the trash is the same area where raw food is stored like onions and lettuce, risking contamination.
13) There are alcoholic beverages stored with cleaning chemicals, risking contamination.
14) Found a fire extinguisher on the floor in a food prep area, not within the law.

Then goes into conclusions and the recommendation they should be closed until they are in compliance with the laws detailed in the report that they are in violation of at this point.

Thanks for filling in the gap ID. If there was any question as to why this place was shut down, this report with fotos should convince any Cafe Mundo guest that the bottom line is more important to them than your health

CAFE MUNDO has always been one of my favorite resturants in San Jose. Eaten there many times, never been sick. the only problems I have had was asking the waiter to call a taxi for me and my tica. The guy he called showed up and when I told him Hotel Presidente he said he didn't know where it was :?: My tica and him got in a huge shouting fight and we bailed out of the taxi when he was stopped in heavy traffic. I also left my cell phone there and next day returned and no one has seen it. I had a $1,300 bill. the phone was used almost non stop. Luckily AT&T waived the charges.

In the evening time, Cafe Mundo usually has a taxi sitting out front with the driver standing around bullshitting with the guard. When you leave, you get the usual "Taxi sir? Taxi??" A bad sign....similar to what you see parked by the Del Rey. :( No doubt, they called this same taxi for you.

Agreed. No doubt, the US franchise restaurants in Costa Rica are either owned, and/or operated by ticos, as well.

And for that matter, I was under the impression that Cafe Mundo was owned by a Canadian woman.

It's actually comforting to know that CR actually has a Health Dept watching out for restaurants that are below standards.

There was an article in Inside Costa Rica about 10 days ago that reported the Costa Rica health department shuts down between 30 and 60 food establishments every month.
