My buddy that does not do internet just stayed at the SL and thank god. If the SL didn't exist, I'd have had to babysit him for 10 days.

Of course he had a great time.

This is a common problem that has been spoken about here several times by myself, Bill (the owner), and many others on this board. The SL staff always answers emails promptly. The problem is the emails getting trapped by spam filters. This could be your own email program (ex. Outlook) or the spam filter used by your email provider.

This can affect emails from other venues in CR as well.

I can personally verify that if Yency or Manfred is working the front desk (almost always) your email will be answered within an hour or two at the very most.

Every email as well as every toll free phone call receive is GOLD to us at Sportsmens Lodge. Our staff knows that everything we do here at SL oringinates with a call or email from our guests. It still frusterates me to see that some people think we do not read or respond to emails. We will continue to work on it from our end however as SRILM said it depends soooo much on spam filter settings on the end we are responding to. Please dont give up on us. If we did not respond to any emails received we simply would not be in business with the current level of low vacancy rates we enjoy at this time.

Thanks,

Bill

I can vouch that emails originating here often get stuck in Spam filters. It happened to one of my confirmations this week.

Costa Rica has been identified by the international internet service provider community as a huge spam engine. As a result, IP addresses (and entire blocks of IP addresses) are BANNED/BLOCKED by many big time USA providers such as AT&T; Comcast; TimeWarner, blah, blah, blah.

Outfits like the SL are simply victims of the mass IP bannings/blocks. I have had emails "go missing" to pretty much every business I have interacted with in Costa Rica at one time or another. "Our" hotels have all been victimized by these IP bannings and there is nothing they can really do about it, so cut 'em some slack, eh?

Most places have toll free numbers anyway!! And, even if they don't, it's peanuts to call 'em up on the phone. (Guys will spend $150 USD for a strumpet but not $1.00 for a 5 minute phone call?!! Incredible!!). I rely myself very heavily on faxes as well as emails for "documentation" but have found picking up the phone is pretty simple when an email goes, seemingly, unanswered. Each and every time said email has "gone missing" it has been a result of a banned IP that one of the larger carriers has identified. Here is but one outfit that works 24/7 on bans: http://www.spamcop.net/bl.shtml and there are TON more. Here's another: http://www.dnsbl.info/ or http://www.dnsbl.org/ . Again, these IP bans are done here in the USA and elsewhere. It isn't done in Costa Rica. There are exceptions to everything, however.

When in doubt, pick up the phone!

One time I walked into the Sportsmans Lodge and all the employees and Bill were having a big party with jello shots and doing keg stands. And for every shot you drank, you were allowed to delete one email. If you could do 4 shots without puking , you got to break a window too.

It was a great party ! Sorry you missed it.

I use Gmail and I've never had any problems sending/receiving emails from the Sportsmans. I guess it doesn't have any pesky built in filters.

Well Bill, I didn't want to start a whole big thing with this post, but a couple of years ago, I wrote the same thing, you sent me a PM on here which I answered & there was no response. Spam filters have nothing to do with PM's on this board.

Don't get me wrong, I like SL & go there for dinner & drinks when I'm in SJ. The service, which used to be pretty bad, has really improved at the bar/restaurant & I've posted to that effect elsewhere. But I'm really not willing to struggle to make a reservation at SL when LA responds to my emails so quickly. They seem to value my patronage, & after the incident described above, I got the opposite impression of SL. It may not be true, I'm just saying that's the impression I got. I'm glad you guys are doing well, but I'll be sticking with La Amistad. Thanks.

I have been traveling and doing business internationally for almost 25 years now. My advice for anyone who does international business:

Go to your internet access provider's website and TURN OFF COMPLETELY any spam filters or blocking agents. Don't try to configure them, TURN THEM OFF.

Get a good POP email agent (i.e. Microsoft Outlook) and use it for all of your email. Configure it to your heart's content, but don't auto-delete any emails, have them sent to a spam folder. Now you are no longer missing any emails. The only caveat is that if you are stuck somewhere without your own computer you have to check your email with someone else's computer using a web browser, but now you're not risking infecting your own computer with a virus, so you're still safe.

SR

Thanks for the advice, but I use yahoo mail, which sends any spam to a folder so I can review it before deleting. That's not the issue.

Just went back to edit this post...in my original post, I clearly said that a followup PM here was ignored, so I don't know why everyone is thinking that it's a spam issue.

Oh, I have dropped it. I wouldn't have said anything more if everyone hadn't just assumed it was a spam issue. I don't give a rat's ass if anyone cares where I stay. I assume you saw the part of my post that says I'm glad that they're doing well. You must have since you quoted it.

And I'll pass on the drink.

I've been thinking that someday maybe I would decide to someday
come down if I someday could.
Can anyone recommend whether the Sportsmens Lodge is a nice place to stay?

Contrary to what folks have said on here about having a hard time to reach the Sportmen's Lodge, I had a good time while there, especially since I feel they went out of their way to make me feel welcome. They answered my emails quickly whenever i emailed them and answered my concerns. There were a few times that it took a couple of hours to answer me back, or the next day, depending on what time I sent the email, but it was always within a few hours at the earliest to 12-24 hours at the latest. The email address that I get a quick response from is info@sportsmenscr.com. Hope this helps.

In my opinion it's the best and always my first choice, That said I am not a frequent traveler been to sick with back problems the last couple years so I am way overdue. They treat you like family will do anything to help and are very genuinely cool people Bill has working with him.

And don't worry half the damn board argues like 12 year old's and it's hard to find a thread without wading through the bullshit, But rest assured you don't see this in person it's all board bullshit.

Now my second choice is where ever Boyd is, not that we are friends but I just have to help anyone who has so many friends has them for a reason, that and it seems like he makes where ever he goes funner and better for us!!!

Have fun and book months early bro!
