Take a look at http://www.amcostarica.com and someone please explain it to me.The article on page 1 is truly confusing but then much of what goes on here in CR is confusing. if you want a real laugh check out the link given for the web site for La Gaceta,the official newspaper in Spanish. The first link is hysterical.

If they kick me out, I'll be down at Guardian Hospital claiming the newest babi born - Automatic Residency. Done.

I don't feel like messing with the bureaucracy of CR residency right now. I got about 300 other fish frying. It is on the to-do list but not a priority.

I don't understand all the continuous bitching about visiting Costa Rica and being a tourist.
You come... you visit ....and you play ...within the laws, and leave after no more than 90 days. If you want to come back you have to wait 72 hours. WTF

yeah, what is up with all the new taxes....and especially the tax for income from other countries...?....will RFM's be taxed...?....one has to start to wonder if CR will drive out retirees/perpetual tourists with all these confusing regulations and new taxes....(not that it is any better in many other places such as beautiful, downtown SoFla)

My reading seems to say that for the most part,it's status quo with the exception that when we return from our minimum of 72 hours out of CR we have to have either $1000 in cash or proof that we have it in a bank account. (doesn't say whether the money has to be in a bank here in CR) We also must have a ticket showing we are planning to leave CR withing 90 days. I have an open bus ticket to Nicaragua. So my interpretation is that the problem has been solved in a reasonable manner

According to what was printed in AmCostarica this morning there are a number of ways to show the money.



Surprisingly it does not mention credit cards which is usual in countries with a resource requirement. I do not think it is particularly onerous to the majority of tourists and is a reasonable way for the country to prevent a tourist becoming a financial burden. Most countries that have a similar requirement rarely require anyone to show proof however it is a tool to allow them to help weed out those they consider undesirable.

haha Phuck em if they want me gone.. It's getting old living in a country of Ch*ldren anyway. Go ahead, flame, but in 11 years I don't think I've ever seen the country make one intelligent decision. Not a hater, just reality.

A return ticket has always been accepted as proof of adequate funds anywhere I have traveled.

My interpretation is that they are simply codifying what has been practice for years. Nothing seems different, even though they had the $1000 requirement, I don't think they bother at the airport.

I am guessing it's the same as every other time, have the papers in order, use Spanish, don't be an ass, get a 90 day stamp.

If you are traveling on a one-way ticket or the return leg on a round trip, that information is in the computer system I believe. They will usually ask now if you have a return ticket if that is the case. Also think if you are on the inbound leg of a round trip, they see you have a return ticket and the requirements are met.
Last time through airport immigration, the lady wasn't going to let me in the country because of no return ticket AND my residency application had been suspended 18 months before that date. Damn good thing I had all the 'pension' papers I needed to leave the country in the first place. Once she saw all that, she just laughed and let me on through.
My immigration lawyer got an earful for that one...
