Brother JazzboCR,

I really wasn't sure what to expect with the prices. I met a couple gents from the SL that live in CR. I can't remember the exact locations, but one lived an hour and a half from SJ and was paying 345 for everything, including high speed internet, 2 BR, etc etc. The other stated he was paying 250 just outside SJ.

I also checked out a post from 2007 describing decent apartments for rent near the DR with security, furnished, etc for 250 dollars.

I knew you could get a good place for the 400-500 dollar range, but I am trying to keep costs low and would go for a flat not too "ghetto" or decrepit but basic for 200-300. Of course safety and location are paramount factors to consider. Obviously close to the Gulch would be ideal.

I never realized so many Gringos lived in greater San Jose!! Just curious, where do you get those sort of specific stats from?

Pura Vida,

The F'Cat

You could try one of the outlying cities also and if a 30-40 min. bus ride doesn't bother you could save some big money for only about $1 each way on a nice bus.

Has anyone ever stayed at Hotel Vistalinda before? If so, what's your thoughts on the place? Also, does anyone know what bus you would take to get into town?

I did read in AM CR that there some executions there not too long ago. I think that was the place. I may be wrong but I would thoroughly research and also check out the security at each and every place from the quality of the guards to how "porous" the facility is (i.e could anyone easily break in from off the street)?

Scotland Apts. for sure I remember someone getting executed there. Please do further investigate and very careful with the chicas company you keep. Not trying to scare but be on top of it. We don't don't want to lose any more bros. down here.

No one ever got executed at Vista Linda Apts. You are wrong about that but your general concerns about security are correct.

Ok I was bored but heres a possible find for $390 a month.

Looking at the map for the apartment I believe you would be right next to soda peru and across the street pretty much from HLH. I don't think I'd be doing any late night walks but it's a nice location for a monger pad. Also they want a 6 month lease but everything is negotiable.

Ad is 2 months old so YMMV

enjoy!

I have stayed at the vista linda apartments several years ago. It is a nice place frequented by many snow birds and retired guys from the USA and Canada.

There is security on duty at night and controlled gated access 24/7. They were chica friendly, but on a quiet basis. Rowdy loud parties are frowned upon and will earn you a reprimand by both management and residents alike.  :?

Fully furnished apartments with kitchens ready to go. I enjoyed shopping at the Mercado during the day for fresh sea food and vegetables. That evening two chicamigas from SL came over and cooked a great meal followed by...  :D

In the AM everyone kind of gathers on the covered patio in a circle of rocking chairs over great Costa Rica coffee and discuss topics of the day, share stories, tips, and make plans.

If you can, stay in the main building. The back building is kind of noisy from the highway adjacent. Especially the second story rooms.

There is a bus stop on the corner that takes you into SJO. Calle Blancos is the route. You can walk to downtown which is about a mile. Great exercise.

Also, there are several pulperias within a couple blocks. A local disco / bar is up the street a few blocks that get going pretty good on weekends. There are restaurants and stores also with walking.

Apartments in San Jose are available and the price can be quit low or it can be at a rate you are not interested in paying. The apartment one guy is comforatble in may not suit your needs or comfort level. A location that is loved by one is not good for another. You may not feel safe where a buddy is very comfortable. Do your homework and look for what suit your needs. Apartments are kind of like girls. I may like one that you don't. I may pay more for one that you say no way. Put the word out you are looking with the local guys in San Jose.

The particular apartment mentioned by Maboman above is gone but it looks to be a good Website to search for a crib.

I just rented an apartment in Sabanna. I found walking the streets that I wanted to rent on was helpfull. I found 3 places but none had what I was looking for. I found one in LaNacion paper and it had what I needed.

Since my spanish is not fluent I took a tica with me to make the calls and find out the particulars on each place before I talked to the landloard. This seemed to work out better as she knew exactly what I needed and the prices came back pretty low.

I settled on a 2 bedroom furnished for 1 all utilities and cable/wifi included for 475 a month. 6month lease with security deposit of 400. Did not like the security deposit as my experience says you never get it back.
