I have not experienced the difficulty getting a drink as was posted. Just like at home I make it a point to know the names of the bar tenders and wait staff. I use as much Spanish as I know to order and to thank them. I tip accordingly just like I would at home. Always smile and say Hi if I am passing through.

You have the key to better service. People, including bartenders, respect those that respect them leading to better service. There have been many posts on this topic. I recall one poster in another thread stating something like "why even know their names"? That kind of attitude translates in how one comes across when they ask for "X" from the bartender/waitress. No wonder the service sucks for some.

The service at the tables in the SL can be a lot worse than the DR.

I care to know their names as much as the name of the guy/gal who cleans the bathrooms. I guess it's too much to expect them to just do their job. I have to do my job the same way whether the client I deal with is great or a complete asshole.

I do not drink at the DR just because of that. The bar girls continue to try and not bring back one's change. Last year when in SJ I also caught one of them taking my colones off the bar and I had not ordered a drink.

This appears to be a personal choice and not one taught by the establishment.

I have never seen a Bar girl do any thing wrong at the HDR. But I am never intoxicated in there

Never have had much problem either. Jessica at the main bar has always been the most efficient one to me... The only one that consistently used to try to steal the change from me was Anabel.
