Tom Swift,
All you said about taxes and other "hidden costs" of living in the US may very well be true, HOWEVER if you look at how Americans live compared to many of these other countries, particularly ones like CR and the Dom. Rep. you can't help but acknowledge that the average American lives MUCH better, at least from a material standpoint, than the average tica or dominicana. Now whether that more "luxurious" lifestyle translates into a happier life is a whole other question.

And as bad as the infrastructure in the USA may be right now, look at how much BETTER it is than here and in other countries. That is where a lot of those taxes you pay are going!! Pay less taxes and live like people here live or pay what you pay and have better infrastructure than here.

And as a side to the above, the people here pay a disporportionate(percentage of income) amount of taxes compared to the USA for the lousy infrastructure they have!!

Thanks to Arnold "The Taxinator" Schwarzenegger.....

California just passed the highest tax increase in U.S. history, approximately $70,000,000,000 over five years, in additional taxes. The tax relief package from our new President will not make up for the increased California taxes from these new taxes. It is estimated that it will cost the average family in California $ 1,400.00 per year in added "revenue increases".

We are already #1 in states sales taxes, state income tax (which the highest rate kicks in at $45,000; one of the lowest amounts), vehicle registration tax, and sixth in business tax. That is prior to the newest ""revenue increases", as the politicians like to call them. H*ll they won't even use the word tax.

How is this benefiting me? Our roads are still crap, we have hospitals closing, businesses are moving out of state. Our schools score 49th in the U.S., but yet we spend some of the highest rates per pupil.

For the first time in California history last year more American citizens moved out of California, than moved in, yet we still had a population increase. I wonder where they came from? The size of California's budget has increased by over 100% in the last ten years.

No taxes do not necessarily equate to more and better services, or infrastructure. In California the taxes are going up, and the infrastructure is crumbling due to the amount of money spent on social services.

Off of my p*ssed off soap box now....

Health & happiness to all....

Steve - Santas Bro

The main discussion reminds me of a real estate saying, which is that one should look for three things when buying -- location, location, and location.

Regarding the comments on taxes in California, and at the risk of being a bit political, the Republicans, beginning with Reagan and his supply side economics, taught the public that taxes are evil and they can have it all for free. What is happening now in CA and in the nation is the repudiation of this.

I hope in the future that we don't spend without an accompanying provision for revenue, or a quid pro quo cut somewhere else. This is critical for the states, which usually have to balance the budget every year.

One could make a strong case that taxes were cut the most for the least worthy, the most able to pay them, the ones that benefitted the most from our capitalist structure, and then accompanied this with removing most of the regulations from their businesses. There has never ever been any organization or group of organizations that effectively self-policed, Allan Greenspan's comments to the contrary.

Facts are facts and not disputable. Taxes pay for things that I personally may not use or agree with but for the most part are necesssary(like roads, bridges that will not collapse, police and other emergency responders that will come to your house, etc, etc.). I like CR's health system as well and that ALSO gets funded with public money.

Man, the power a girl has over a guy with the words "what, you can't afford $100?" is amazing.

I see a lot of gringo ego when people watching at the del rey and it's hilarious.

A great retort would be: "Sure I can, but you are not worth it."

Hilarious! My novia caught me laughing at the "what, you can't afford $100?" line. When I told her what I was laughing about she told me to enjoy the laugh but keep it on the down-low. She might need that line some day! 8)
