The tourist train to Caldera is old news. I'd like to know more about this train that COJ is talking about. Up UNTIL they started the tourist train acouple of years ago, my impression was that the "jungle" or "banana" trains in CR (as they were sometimes called stopped running after the big earthquake in the early 90's which destroyed some of those rickety bridges that DiegoC was talking about. But I recall hearing some people complain about the noise from some local train in SJ and seem to recall hearing a train whistle once myself when I was staying over near CRLA. And this was not just on a weekend. But I've never actually SEEN a training running in SJ. Maybe its just the "ghost" of trains past.

Or maybe there is some other local train that still runs or was started up relatively recently that I just didn't know about. If there is, that might be an interesting experience for less than a buck and less than a full day's investment.
