There is a station on the south west corner of parque sabana. Costs 400 colones. I suggest you only take it going east as the area to the west of that point is kind of rough. Enjoy.

Are you talking about the tourist train from San Jose to Caldera? It is supposed to be a lot of fun. They are located in the old Pacific Train Station which is near Clinica Biblica. It is Avenue 20, Calle 2.

When it stops raining so much I want to take my son to see his grandfather in Puntarenas.

Best thing to do is email them americatravel@ice.co.cr.

Do not waste anytime as during the tourist season the train sells out quickly. A neighbor of mine tried to book it in early February for mid February a couple of years ago. They told him the next open date was mid March.

Important tip from Irish Drifter. Buy tickets in advance. I had no idea it sold out.

My understand is they have entertainment and other activities during the tirp.

Before the government shut down the eastern RR, I took the trip to Limon. There was lots of entertainment, rickety bridges that swayed and dipped as you crossed (that can be entertaining), chickens and other bird carried in cages on-board the train, roving food and beverage vendors, and here and there a minstrel. Quite an experience.

The tourist train to Caldera is old news. I'd like to know more about this train that COJ is talking about. Up UNTIL they started the tourist train acouple of years ago, my impression was that the "jungle" or "banana" trains in CR (as they were sometimes called stopped running after the big earthquake in the early 90's which destroyed some of those rickety bridges that DiegoC was talking about. But I recall hearing some people complain about the noise from some local train in SJ and seem to recall hearing a train whistle once myself when I was staying over near CRLA. And this was not just on a weekend. But I've never actually SEEN a training running in SJ. Maybe its just the "ghost" of trains past. :P  Or maybe there is some other local train that still runs or was started up relatively recently that I just didn't know about. If there is, that might be an interesting experience for less than a buck and less than a full day's investment.

The train C.O. refers to is the commuter train that runs Monday to Friday in the morning and evening rush hours. There are two lines. One from the pacifco train station to Pavas and the other from the station to San Pedro. They are combined so you can ride from Pavas to San Pedro.

It has been operational for about two years and is very successful.

They are in the process of rebuilding the track to Heredia and hope to have the third line up and running in December.

I.D.,
Have you taken it and is there any interesting scenery "urban landscape" along the way. It sounds like it might be somewhat interesting in its own right with out the fullday time investment and also without the high gringo tourist cost.

That train from Heredia sounds sweet for somebody planning to live outside the urban noise-and-stink but still wishing access to sophisticated pleasures. LIKE ME. Even if it's a commuter train and thus not running late hours.

I have never taken the train. My only experience with it is when the 5:30 AM one blows his whistle for the crossing on the west side of Sabana Park and wakes me up. :(

I would guess that there might be some interesting scenery on the train. Most likely like the Miami metro rail it is hit and miss. Evening trains are probably better as early morning many people are grumpy and prefer to be left alone.

Not a real problem. Heredia bus service is frequent and inexpensive. Besides any late night "companion" you invite back to your casa would not be caught dead on either the train or the bus.
