JohnArizona,
I dont know if you know this but in Costa Rica, the minimum wage as of June 08 is $364.40 per month and a regular work week is more like 50 hours a week with one day off.
Sure, they are big local costa rican companies and a lot of big foreign companies there as well. But first thing is that the big local foreign companies are there to save money so they are hiring local talent for less then 1/3 of what they would be paid in the US.
Now, why would Wal-Mart hire a guy from the street, to be the regional manager in Costa Rica and pay him $120k a year if they can hire one in Costa Rica for about $30,000 a year, that knows the language, the country and what its people are looking for? from a business point of view it wouldnt make any sense.
When Wal-mart went to Costa Rica, they probably sent some of their people but they already worked for Wal-mart at the time.
Also, Why would that comany in Costa Rica hire a foreigner living in Costa Rica for that job even if the foreigner could speak fluent Spanish? First off, the law says you can´t hire a foreigner unless its not possible to find that particular talent in Costa Rica. Then, the person has to be able to work. Meaning that if you are on a pension/retied visa, you cant work, on a tourist visa forget about it, on a student visa, now way.
Now, lets say you do have a residency, and can legally work, you still have the law against you and the ticos will work cheaper.
So yes, they are high paying job available. You can peruse through the local newspaper Lanacion and see what they have available. Just keep in mind that 99% of these jobs in the classified section, youll have to be fluent in Spanish and be legally able to work in Costa Rica.
When I first moved to Costa Rica, 7 years ago, I was making $300 a week working 6 days 10 hour per day and I was seen as well paid. It took me a long time before I was able to break the $30k per year mark and even longer to go beyond that. I do have a good education and have a good job background with known companies but lets face it, if you are looking to get a well paid job in making more then $3000 a month even if you got skills you might as well forget about it unless your current company transfers you down here.
In lieu of these odds, work for a sportsbook, call center, teach english, be a bar tender to make money. Sportsbook and call centers will pay you the most especially if you can get a job as a manager which is a hard thing to do.
