Come on now....all the so called TALENT on this board & not much of value here.

Surely there are US or foreign companies that have managers or something in CR, Panama, etc. Sheraton, Marriott, Holiday Inn, Sleep Inn dont they pay someone some decent money to work in CR? What about other industries?

Or are these jobs and people just not in the monger realm? Who is the Seagrems rep? Budwieser? Walmart? Toyota?

Do they just drop the soap off at the dock, load up with bananas and head back north?

I could see where the sports books people are (were) flush...what else?

Come on people...I paid 39 bucks VIP and I´m thinking of going for LIFEr....don´t let me down.

JohnArizona,

I dont know if you know this but in Costa Rica, the minimum wage as of June 08 is $364.40 per month and a regular work week is more like 50 hours a week with one day off.

Sure, they are big local costa rican companies and a lot of big foreign companies there as well. But first thing is that the big local foreign companies are there to save money so they are hiring local talent for less then 1/3 of what they would be paid in the US.

Now, why would Wal-Mart hire a guy from the street, to be the regional manager in Costa Rica and pay him $120k a year if they can hire one in Costa Rica for about $30,000 a year, that knows the language, the country and what its people are looking for? from a business point of view it wouldnt make any sense.

When Wal-mart went to Costa Rica, they probably sent some of their people but they already worked for Wal-mart at the time.

Also, Why would that comany in Costa Rica hire a foreigner living in Costa Rica for that job even if the foreigner could speak fluent Spanish? First off, the law says you can´t hire a foreigner unless its not possible to find that particular talent in Costa Rica. Then, the person has to be able to work. Meaning that if you are on a pension/retied visa, you cant work, on a tourist visa forget about it, on a student visa, now way.

Now, lets say you do have a residency, and can legally work, you still have the law against you and the ticos will work cheaper.

So yes, they are high paying job available. You can peruse through the local newspaper Lanacion and see what they have available. Just keep in mind that 99% of these jobs in the classified section, youll have to be fluent in Spanish and be legally able to work in Costa Rica.

When I first moved to Costa Rica, 7 years ago, I was making $300 a week working 6 days 10 hour per day and I was seen as well paid. It took me a long time before I was able to break the $30k per year mark and even longer to go beyond that. I do have a good education and have a good job background with known companies but lets face it, if you are looking to get a well paid job in making more then $3000 a month even if you got skills you might as well forget about it unless your current company transfers you down here.

In lieu of these odds, work for a sportsbook, call center, teach english, be a bar tender to make money. Sportsbook and call centers will pay you the most especially if you can get a job as a manager which is a hard thing to do.

thanks for the info Kot. I am not looking for a job in CR. I just off a flight from Panama and Im not looking for a job there either. I'm one of these guys who does not intend to be bored (enough to look for work) in retirement.

I was just looking for details on what (type of) people had good paying jobs there, not necessarily how one can land one of those jobs. Maybe its a smaller group than I imagine, but I still say...come on, surely there are some big paying jobs.

Looking for info flow more than Im right your wrong discussion.

Yea NO KIDDING. I've always wondered how they are able to demand so much when the average wage is so low, of course there are a bunch of discussions about that on this website.

I guess when you consider how small the populations are in places like CR and Panama and how slowly the economy seems to evolve compared to somewhere like Korea or Taiwan and maybe there just is not big jobs anywhere. But then why cant get you a TLN for $20 like you could in those places way back when?

Course when you think of how much the dollar has deterioated, maybe we are getting it for $20...its just called $150 now.

My fat ass may be for sale if my 401K keeps crashing & my house, shit what a nightmare. Being a whore aint so bad. Retired beach bum be better tho.

Where can I see any listings or other information on sports books?

I think I could be a real asset to them, I know the wagering system, have worked as a sports journalist, speak both English/Spanish and I am well-educated (Master's Degree). Seems like the kind of thing that would be up my alley and help me get down to CR for a good while.

You're over qualified for ANY job in CR.

I was thinking of being the piano player in a Tico massage parlor; might pay well...'course I'd have to learn how to play first. Or maybe towel boy...

Knowing the wagering system will not help you much in a sportsbook. You'll only be qualified to answer phone calls like anyone else for $200-$300 a week.

To be a manager, you have to have years of line experience, knowing when to move lines and when to make judgement calls with various kinds of players. This is something that can only be learned from experience, and you don't have any.

On the other hand, if you're willing to work for $200-$300 a week for a year or two, you can likely move up in management to a $500-$700 a week position.

Unless you can bring in business, you're never going to make a lot of money working for a sportsbook.

I would imagine that some of the girls at HDR make a pretty good living. I doubt that you would do as well as most of them though!

More seriously though, the company that I work for has ONE person in C.R. I'm certain that he earns a US wage (maybe even an expat bonus) while there. He is hispanic and speaks the language but he is not from C.R.

I keep looking at the company job postings, hoping that a position in an exotic (and friendly) local opens up. Unfortunately, these days, it seems that they prefer to hire a "local" rather than have to bother with visas, work permits, etc.

If something finds its way to you, Western, please do consider me for a bootman position. Surely you'll be able to swing that given my lack of skill set(s).....
