Whew, long thread!
Regarding though the 1% quote, which mostly applied to Ticas, I say do the math. Between the ages of 18 and 28 roughly 5% of Ticas are hookers. Once though you realize that during this decade many slip in and out of hooking, the number grows to (my estimate) 25% or more. Of all women in CR at any one time, sure, maybe only 1% are hookers. But you narrow it by age and appreciate that chicas drop in and out of the business, and the numbers swell.
It's a Tica way of life--which explains why the grocery store cashiers are so friendly. They have jobs and families, just aren't opposed to extra money.
Where are you getting your math??? My math is as follows:
There are now about $3.8million people living in Costa Rica according to the national census. Surprisingly, only 1/3 are actual and legal Costa Ricans. While the rest are mostly legal and illegal foreigners. Of those, the vast majority are Nicaraguan and Colombian. There are also some small minorities like Americans, Germans, Canadians and Chinese in the mix.
Anyway, the Minister of Health estimates there are between 3,000 and 5,000 sex workers. So, I ask that you do the math. Even if prostitutes were at 1%, that would mean the Minister of Health is wrong be a large factor. 1% means about 40,000 prostitutes. Now, you are saying that about 1/4 of all young girls are hooking, which would probably double or triple that number???? Upwards of several hundred thousands....
Bold claim my man... Where's your math???
The other point you make is the prostitution is part of the Tico culture. I would agree that it is certainly acceptable by the majority. However, your opinion here probably is tainted by hours, days or weeks of parking yourself at a brothel San Jose El Centro. In a different post, someone sited parts of Hatillo or Desamp as being virtual training grounds for hookers. I agree there are areas like this..... However, to say that a few small ghettos in city represent the entire culture is far-fetched.
I get frustrated when I here tourists say that these girls have no choice. About the only girls that don't have a choice are the ones that are willingly or unwillingly forced into this by gangs in their own country... Colombia, DR.... I would say this is less than 10% of the work force at the DR. The others are all in it by choice.
You also must be a rooky because you are listening to and BELIEVING their sob stories. The my family has been uprooted by a hurricane is a new one and albeit creative. Please don't send her money. Its probably a lie.
When this topic comes up... I always think about a regular girl you can see every day at the DR. She is hot, speaks english and VERY SUCCESSFUL. She probably is making between $200-$400 per day. My guess is upwards of $100K per year tax free. More than many gringos. I don't know her name, but I was getting a hair cut in Escazu in a pretty expensive spa/salon. My cut only costs $15, but women run $100 and upward. This girl arrived in a large and new SUV with her tico boyfriend. They were both gucci, izod and designer makes head to toe. Shit that I can't even really afford to buy. When she recognized me, she did a little hair flip, a wink and then laughed.
Circling back to the original point of the thread... knowing that less than 1% of women in CR are sex workers. Why do men consistently target them as novias???? I still don't get it.
