I was in a leather and tack shop yesterday, stocking up for my trip. On the board behind the counter was a note that looked somehow familiar. On closer examination, it was a $100c Costa Rican bill. I have never seen one before and I thought it was interesting to find one hanging next to the head stalls in a tack room in Oregon.

Are $100c bills common and I just haven't noticed or is this an anomaly? Are there $500c notes as well?

I have to go by there again before I depart and, if they are hard to come by, I may try to barter this one. I would gladly exchange a $500c coin in great condition...

I just know I could have a ton of laughs paying "cien" with it! :P    8)

I’ve never seen a 100 clony note either that I can think of. I have a 500 CRC bill that as of 2003 were reluctantly accepted but good luck spending it now. Funny little blurb: I got a 500 paper bill in change at the BM bar and they didn't want to accept it back :D And of course I have one of the 5 clonie works of art that is represented in Teatro National, that you can buy from street vendors for a 1,000 or so :P

There is a copy and print shop in Barrio California on the corner of Ave.1 that has a notebook with all the old bills. If it existed I bet they have it.

The lowest denomination Costa Rican note in circulation is 1000c. The 500c note was taken out of circulation in early 2005.

I still have 100c and 500c Costa Rican bills from my first trip to Costa Rica, a nice souvenir.

When I started going to CR in 1997 , not only did they have 100c notes but they also had 50 c notes. They are out of circulation and are no longer negotiable.
And of course they have the famous 5 c note that is now sold as a souvenir.

I just checked as I couldn't remember the amount of a bill a civilian tica gave me my first trip to San Jose over four years ago. Turns out is a 5 colone note in mint condition. Just noticed you post above, guess I have one of those same souvenier notes .rbc100

I have 10 bills of $50 colones and 12 bills of $100 colones. I got them in the early 90's when I began going to CR. The bill of 50 colones is green and it has the picture of Gaspar Ortuno y Ors. In the back it has a picture of the old bank of Costa Rica. The bill of 100 is grey, it has a picture of Ricardo Jimenez in the front and the Supreme Court of Justice in the back.
