FWIW, a friend of mine bought a bar on Tropicana in Las Vegas. The Bartenders were all 50 year ex-cocktail waitresses. He replaced them with Hooter girl types in similar garb and his video poker drop went from 7K a week to 55K a week in six months. Word travels fast.

I thought everyone did. Only problem is that they cost more than the putas. You just don't pay them to leave.

Easy there, Fuzebox. GR tagged everything he wanted to in all of SJ; why do you think he now seeks the action of Rio and is soon to embark on a trip to Medellin?

Cult or whatevever, it is the size of the pour I am interested in. I found on my first and only trip that the bar maids at the Del Rey were not very friendly with the pours, despite good tips. I can pay the bar....or I can tip the bartender, but not both. I'd prefer to tip the bartender.

I asked the Del Rey barkeep what the deal was, and the woman said the camera. Nonsense...there is too much commerce in that place for an accurate managerial measurement of the amount of pours on small basis.

By the way....what say those in the know about bringing in one's own flask and discretly using same in the Blue Marlin or the Key Largo? This $50 a bottle of Scotch isn't even on their menu and the Johnnie Walker gets tiresome at the high price.

Yeah....call me Silas Marner, Jr. I like to keep the money in my pants and in the bank and in my safes. However, if the bar keep is giving me GOOD pours, I am more than happy to pay the going rate.

After all, no head....no backstage pass, right>?!

If I am drinking expensive cognac, I will saunter back to the men's room with glass in hand and fill my glass from a small flask. I am not cheap, but if I pay for a couple of drinks, I do not mind cutting the house out of one overpriced refill.

Being in the industry now 13 years, yes, female bartenders are the norm. Most every club I have worked/managed what have you, 80/20 girls to guy percent. Girls make sales... guys make more. Girls have tits and that = tips. Back when I was slinging drinks 12 bartenders. 4 were male. One guy per bar (4 bars) 34K sq ft club. 3300 avg person on a saturday night. This venue was open 2 years. Not one time was there ever a female to have high sales for the night. (any night). Fortunately they split tips. there were also 4 "beer tubs" with girls of course. On July 3, 2003 one girl sold 1100 bud lite alone. 10pm-1:45am. Not counting other domestics or imports... A rack and ass = tips and some sales, a guy = higher sales.

Ruffnutz, you're right about Rio but the prices you pay at Centaurus for a girl are a lot higher than at the Del Rey (especially now with the exchange rate in Brazil), so you are talking probably $250 for an hour with a hottie in Centaurus with limited time versus $100 at the Del Rey for probably longer in your own hotel room.

Each place has its advantages and if I had the money to blow, I would be in Centaurus every single night.

I have found that almost everywhere in CR, a drink will contain one shot, measured with painstaking accuracy. You may call the cameras nonsense, but I know a bartender who was fired from the Key Largo for giving away a few soft drinks. I have never seen the level of tightness and penny pinching I have seen among bar (and restaurant) management here. If you want a healthy(?) drink, order a double or triple. If you want a decent price on said drink, stay the Hell out of the Del Rey (or any other gringo bar).

You can beat a jigger and any camera.... Hands down done it. You do have to have the intellect to rememeber the amount of short pours and "hook up" you did so your liquor counts come in at or below X percent.
Example, I get you plastered on your first 4 dirnks, short pour you on the last 5, short pour "girlie" drinks and I win! Did it for many years and never got busted, not buy "mystery guest" cameras or anything else. Also, remember jiggers come in various sizes. Watch what side they pour from... CR uses metric. I am not familiar with. Us we used 1 oz - 1 1/2 oz. I brought my own. 7/8 oz -1 1/4... make 6-800 drinks a night and you come in way under the bar and your sales are bling. Even with a drag on a 7/8 oz... I do a 1.5 count and still at less than my 1 1/4... more liek 1 1/8. Drag of the 1 1/4.. I was on par with the standard 1 1/2.

They are right, stay the hell out of the DR KL if you want good drinks unless you know how to work the bar staff.!!!!

DTA,

"Intellect" doesn't strike me as the operative word here. You'd better hope that St. Peter isn't a drinker. If he is, you'll be pouring drinks for a much less forgiving boss.

Ciaociao

I'd serve St. Peter a drink... but I charge him!

As for the intellect, I am talking about the bartenders.

If there is a guy behind the bar I just turn around and walk out. I dont go to the bar to bs with or look at a guy. I can drink much cheaper with guys outside the bar. However even if the guy was giving free drinks, I'd leave and head for a place with a woman.

In fact it always amazes me how many guys give business to some bar with a male bartender...I REPEAT...turn around, walk out. And while even an old lady beats a male bartender, I appreciate the Trops thinking above.

I hope you're not referring to the gulch as "everywhere in CR"...

The best part about drinking in CR versus the USA is the overpouring!

I don't know where in the USA you're from, or what kind of bars you go to, but what I get in the 'gulch' is a damned sight weaker than what was poured in bars 'back home' in Northern California. Of course the places I hung out were not chain restaurant/bars but bars that had been around since the end of prohibition and catered to 'ordinary' drinkers (and alcoholics), not young upwardly mobile professionals.
