There are sports bars everywhere you look in the states. Someone is making money with them or you would not see any.
Good luck charging $5 a beer in Costa Rica, much less $7 like they get in many upscale bars in the US.. Hard to make a profit when your compitition is selling them for $1.50

And there are sports all yr round with nascar and various other sports.
If a dump like the NYB with their high prices and lousy food can make a go of it; a classy place with good food and sports options could be a success .
The owner invested $75 dollars to open that place. LOL. Not hard to get a ROI on what he put into it, which is essentially nothing.

The colonial this yr is doing a good job, last sunday the service was good and they had 6 early games on. The SL forget it.
Yes, the Colonial is a great example of why this is a bad idea. I go there all the time. 6 games going on football sunday and only about 30 guys there to watch the game (maybe less). I sat there all day, I had a burger and serveral beers and spent less than $20. Multiply 30 people by $20 each (maybe) and that is less than $600 on one of your 16 best days of the year. I know putas that make more money than that. Keep in mind, the $600 is not profit, you have to pay labor, rent (motgage), beer and food, (not to mention getting a return on your original investment ) and you would be lucky to have $150 left over.
