I’m considering investing in a very chi, upscale blood-pressure testing service. What are the steps to getting this started, investment amount, permits, laws, etc, anyone with information please reply, possibly need a partner.

LOL ...... that is good!!!! For those that haven't been to the Gulch lately their is this guy that is hustling for blood pressure tests along with the cigar and sunglass sales peddlers when you walk out of the Del Rey.

It just kills me, the last thing I need is a blood pressure test after I walk out of Del Rey.

Great post!!!!!

I believe that "blood pressure checker" has been working outside the Del Rey for at least several years. I'm certain that OFT's post was a sarcastic mockery of this same guy.

Z-Man,

In theory not a bad idea but... ever see a P & L on a Sportsbar in the US? Checkout the June-September revenue numbers.

Once the NBA is over, watching Golf, Baseball and the WNBA are not big draws. I would only see that as be amplified here in SJ. And Shawn4DR don't bitch slap me for leaving your sport out  vvvrrrooommm, vvvrrrooommm :)
MMA (mixed martial arts) promotions are popping up everywhere. Gives us something to watch during the "off-season". By the time someone could go through all the red tape and get a sports bar open ... there will be MMA on tv every night! .... And yes , theres Nascar and a 9 month season.

There are sports bars everywhere you look in the states. Someone is making money with them or you would not see any.

And there are sports all yr round with nascar and various other sports.

If a dump like the NYB with their high prices and lousy food can make a go of it; a classy place with good food and sports options could be a success .

The colonial this yr is doing a good job, last sunday the service was good and they had 6 early games on. The SL forget it.

A dump???? Hey this is San Jose not Manhattan. The NYB is hardly a dump.

High prices???? Imperial is 950 colones, hardly outrageous for the gulch.

Lousy food???? Very subjective. I have always enjoyed the burger, chili and soups.

Guess the NYB is a real YMMV experience and as an added bonus every once in awhile a hidden gem can be found there.

Good luck charging $5 a beer in Costa Rica, much less $7 like they get in many upscale bars in the US.. Hard to make a profit when your compitition is selling them for $1.50

The owner invested $75 dollars to open that place. LOL. Not hard to get a ROI on what he put into it, which is essentially nothing.

Yes, the Colonial is a great example of why this is a bad idea. I go there all the time. 6 games going on football sunday and only about 30 guys there to watch the game (maybe less). I sat there all day, I had a burger and serveral beers and spent less than $20. Multiply 30 people by $20 each (maybe) and that is less than $600 on one of your 16 best days of the year. I know putas that make more money than that. Keep in mind, the $600 is not profit, you have to pay labor, rent (motgage), beer and food, (not to mention getting a return on your original investment ) and you would be lucky to have $150 left over.

Like I stated before there are sports bars everywhere you look in the states so they must be making money.

Who said you would have to charge 5$ for a beer???

And the colonial is always packed for the early games even though everyone knows how bad the service is. Everyone would prefer a more comfortable place with more big TV's.

And who cares how much it cost to start up NYB it is a dump with high prices and bad food. It would not take much to compete with them.

And SJ is in dire need of more good restaurants.

And the prices are almost as high as the DR without the scenery at the NYB. And the burgher is poor and comes with a handful of fries.

After much consideration and reading the posts I have decided that it simply may not be feasible to open an upscale sports bar in San Jose. The costs associated with opening such a place and maintaining it (imagine 20 or so 40' HDTV's and maintaining them and avoiding their being stolen). Not to mention not everyone is a raving alcoholic that drinks incessantly.
On Sunday the Dolphins were on CBS so I was forced to go to a bar to watch the Giants. I was in FTL and there a plenty of sportsbars. But I went to one where I could get buckets of beer for $10. That and strippers used to drink free there, so I thought I may be fortunate.
3 buckets, a Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich and two shots of Patron set me back around $60. Not bad at all but I doubt I would have been as excited about that tab for one in SJO.
And "Laura," to whom I gave a beer (allegedly a stripper at Cheetah Hallandale) better have gotten to bed/rehab/the hospital/the morgue as she looked like she hadn't slept in days. But before I could work on my states-side negotiating skills, she apparently scored someting from the guy down the bar and disappeared with her equally cracked-out girlfriends.
I will just have to avoid big sporting events occuring during my vacations to the gulch. Oh well. :(

THE NEW YORK BAR a dump??? I agree with ID, this is Costa Rica, not NY and if you want elegant, stay in the big cities in the states. The NYB has lower prices than the DR, BL, SL, and a lot lower than ZB which by the way is double the DR for a mixed drank.(AND I HAVEN'T HEARD MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THEIR PRICES). It is all about variety and satisfying all the diferent desires, needs, and perferences. If you don't like one place, you have the choise of moving on to another venue that better fits your tastes. I personally find that they all have something to offer. entertainment, friendships, chicas , chicas, chicas!!!!!!!!!!

Mr. Gusto;
I will be at Caesar's Palace watching the Giants bring home the Super Bowl. If only the game were at Pro Player again........
Otherwise I will probably be back at the same sportsbar on SR7 drinking excessively and looking for "misguided" "dancers."
