I do not believe it maters where you stay (I am talking about CRT hotels low rent or high end) If you are worried about being mugged, It is all about making good decisions. Do not take chances, do not walk anywhere at night. Do not get drunk and make yourself an easy target. It is as simple as that.

Is it really that bad at night? I've been reading stories here, but I can't imagine it being that bad at night? Is it like NYC in the 1970's there?

Spent most of my adult in Chicago area, Several areas I would never consider walking around after dark.....

IMHO same as any large city, Do not be STUPID, follow the advice above and you will be fine..

I rather save the extra hotel money and spend it on a session at ZB. Castillo's rate is about 50. It's tempting since its close to all the action.

Its great until you get robbed.

Guys have been staying at SL, Hotel Castillo and now La Amistad and do not remember a single report of a street robbery.

Why would you make a comment like that?

ID..... I don't think Jimmydr was talking about the Castillo, SL, etc.. I think he was referring to the low end places like Hotel Johnson and the like.

Berk.....

Hard to draw that conclusion when he posted it using Terminators quote that Castillos's rate is about $50.00

I would stay at the castillo, the little extra you would pay for a standard room, eliminates all your security problems.

I have never stayed at any of the low rent places. My first trip I stayed at the Marriott one of the best hotels in Costa Rica. On second trip I stayed at the Presidente, third & fourth the SL 6th Castillo, seventh SL, and I am booked for # 8 at the SL. However, if you use one of the CRT low Rent hotels you do not have to worry about safety any more then you would if you stayed at any of the higher end places. Admit one has worked hard to find us places to stay at all price ranges. I would look for one with a room safe and 24-hour security. If you are worried about getting stuff, rip off in your room that can happen anywhere. I cannot remember reading anything about repeated complaints about any one hotel. If you are worried, get mugged in front of one of those hotel just ask the door man (security) to call you a cab they will be happy to most get a little bit of a commission (50 or 100 colonies). I am very happy at the SL for short trips but next February I am planning to stay a month to attend Spanish school I will be looking into one of the low rent apartments and I will not feel unsafe staying there we have a lot of members staying at place like this with no problems.

So Tim Bones if you can explain what your problem is with stay staying at one of the apartments that many of our veteran members stay at let us know instead of witting a one line statement bashing me

I stand by the statement I made earlier.

Low rent places have there pros and cons. Some do not have private baths, Clients can be different (note i said can not all), theft is always a possibility when bringing girls back to your room (even the nice ones) and the barrio can be a little rough at night. As a hotel owner we all face these things once in a while. The other night we had a homeless person steal the rubber mat from under the locked and guarded front door of my hotel. It happens in SJ like any other large city. If you stay at a low rent hotel or not so traveled barrio take cabs not buses. You can always call the hotels and try to find a deal. Most hotels will give you a better price if they have vacancy. Not $15 per night but maybe $25 to $30. You will have a more enjoyable stay at the Pres, SL, Costillo and Amistad . Also you will meet other CRT members that always make the trip more fun. Just a thought.

Matt

My main concern was having someone break into my room and stealing stuff, since most of these low rent place don't have safes.

Terminator that is a big concern I personally would not stay in a place that did not have a safe. It is always possible that someone could brake into you room however, I would be more worried about the hotel staff and especially the chica`s. you want to take away the temptation, if you leave some out that is valuable it mite be too much for someone with a very different mentality (compared to ours) to handle.

Stayed at the Hotel Inca Real once and it was safe, clean and inexpensive. No air conditioning though. It's close to ZB and NF.

Casa Vino has an apartment that is safe and is close to ZB and NF. There is no front desk, as it is an apartment. But the Tico that handles things locally is a great resource.

Both of these are on the sponsor page.

A combination safe provides an extra level of security than a key safe. Castillo has key safe and La Amisted, SL,Prez have the combination safes

Hotel Inca Real cost about 45, I would rather stay at Castillo than that place. No AC too.
