The rest have been the freelancers in whatever color cars they happen to be driving... some are red taxis and some are not. I have never had to "go up stairs" to catch a ride or find a driver. They are all down stairs at the arrivial area. The guys have their cars parked in the covered parking area. We walk across the street to the parking garage and we are off...

Berk,
That sounds dangerous. Hope he doesn't take a detour to where his buddies are waiting for you and your bags. I don't think it's worth the $6-8 savings.

For anybody who's interested in saving some money, take the Interbus airport shuttle for $6. Book them at least 3-4 days in advance at: www.interbusonline.com (I already booked mine for Memorial Day weekend.)

It's not anymore dangerous than getting in any other "cab" anywhere in the entire city. Show me ONE report or even ONE newspaper article where a non-orange cab driver jacked some non-local up. My chances of being jacked up by some local cop and/or a DR chica are better.

Your "fears" are unfounded and not backed by experience. Here's a little known fact..... not everything is TRUE or even based in FACT that one reads on CRT. Here's a good example. On any given night any sober gringo could walk through Parque Morazon UNHARMED. If though, one listen's to every "the sky is falling" opinion out there the impression is 3 gringos are stabbed to death and 5 others mugged every night in PM which, as we all know, is not the case.

Good points on both sides. After giving it some more thought, I guess we could be a little more vulnerable of a target when we just arrive at SJO...... "Michael Monger" who only 8 hours prior was in "Bumblebee Hollow, Iowa".....is now at SJO, fresh off the plane, still clad in his heavy, cold weather jacket, pockets flush with pu*sy cash and anxious to "get down to business"........could indeed look tempting to an unscrupulous miscreant and his cohorts in waiting  .....possibly landing the unsuspecting monger in a dumpster in some back alley in San Jose, with empty pockets and two to the chest :( ........ a week later after one of us reads about it in AM COSTA RICA, all of us thinking the same thing..........."I wonder if he was CRT?" :?

Yes, I will agree with that to a point, but I when I catch a cab in the city I usually don't have all shit in the trunk, so I can jump out if something is shady. (I'm not implying that I wouldn't leave my luggage if I smelled something wrong, but I don't really want to put myself in that position) And I'm with another person 95% of the time, which makes it less likely that they would try anything.

That's quite an interesting way of looking at it. It only takes one time to become a statistic. Personally, I don't want to be the first, so I'll just avoid taking pirate taxis or private rides from the airport. So if no gringo got robbed in Morazan Park, you would conclude that it's safe to walk there at night by yourself? :? Sometimes you just have to use common sense.

Makes a good point - never even thought about it. Personally, I'm a gringo by himself in a foreign country, in a foreign taxi so I don't know how much safer I would be reguardless of the color of the cab. Guess I figured I know the way to the city and hotel and can tell pretty fast if something is up. Maybe I'll make sure the driver just dropped somone off with their bags safely first. I TRY to pay very good attention to my surroundings in Foreign countries and keep myself out of trouble.

Interbus is looking better and better.

I know there's a sticky for 'private drivers', but that seems focused on trips out to attractions/jaco/etc.

My question is whether there are any private car services. I use these all the time in the states, and here at least they are often actually less than the airport taxis. Also, I like the idea of having someone waiting there with my name on a sign. I think I'd prefer an actual company, rather than just some guy with a phone number, but I don't know if these exist.

I did some research, and it looks like ggescorts will do a pickup for $20, but I think that's on top of whatever escort arrangement you might work out. Not all that interested in the gg approach. I'm staying at SL and I'm a bit concerned that the random cab won't know it. Has anyone had SL set up a private ride for you?

Any other ideas? I'm assuming this is doable for $20, and might be simpler (for a my first trip at least) than winging it with a cab. My spanish is very weak.

I've found that lately more and more drivers know where it is. When I was staying there in late 05 and early 06, nobody knew it. But more recently, more cabbies know exactly where it is. Before you pay for the taxi, the driver will ask where you are going. If he doesn't know, ask another drivers, there's a bunch of them.

Hotel-arranged taxis are usually 25+% more expensive.

I do not think anyone would disagree with your statement "not everything is TRUE or even based in FACT that one reads on CRT." Certainly anything posted on this board, or any unmoderated board, must be carefully evaluated.

While your statement "On any given night any sober gringo could walk through Parque Morazan UNHARMED." might be true in a majority of cases it is not something that is a certainty. Gringos have been assaulted and mugged in Parque Morazan at night. Was it their first venture into the park at night? Were they sober? Those are unknowns but I do not think you can say either were the circumstances in every case.

When traveling on the auto pistas around San Jose you will notice yellow hearts with a halo above them painted on the pavement. They indicate at that place a pedestrian was killed. Some walking on the shoulder of the roadway but the majority trying to cross the pista. Was it the first time they tried to cross? Doubtful, it is most likely something they had successfully done many times in the past. I liken that to being sober and walking through Parque Morazan at night. You have done is successfully in the past but that is no guarantee you will be successful this time.

If you are going to pay $20 - just pay the $18 for a standard orange taxi. Exit through the area where the car rentals are - you can pay in dollars - - right at the window by the car rentals before you even step outside the airport to catch the taxi. The Taxis are about 20 feet from where you pay at the exit. They will direct you to the first one in line - no problems (very small airport). Just give the driver the name of the hotel and he should take you straight there. AT MOST you should have to tell him it is in barrio Otyoa - Calle 13 between Avenida 9 and 11.

If still gets confused print this and hand it to him: Sportsmens Lounge - encuentra a 200 metros oeste de la rampa del hospital Calderon Guardia y 25 sur, calle 13 entre Av.9 y Av.11 casa 949 en barrio Otyoa, San Jose

If he is still confused - GET OUT 'cause he is too dumb to drive.
