I think the answer depends on how you will feel
when you check into the Presidente and they
tell you about the dress policy, then you go to
the Blue Marlin and see this fine Tica that you
just have to have, but she is wearing a mini-skirt,
which the Presidente doesn't allow.
I bring that up because I came across that decision
more than once on my recent trip last week,
staying at the Presidente. A couple of the Ticas I
just told to go because of what they were wearing,
knowing I wouldn't be able to get them in the
Presidente. One in particular I just couldn't live
without, and the price was okay ($150 TLN starting at 5 PM).
I just told her, you wear pants and a regular shirt tomorrow
and you got a deal, she did, and we had a great time.
So, if you don't want to worry about what your guest is
wearing, or make other arrangements with her,
stay at the SL, or perhaps Amon Plaza, or Castillo.
But if you and your new friend are flexible,
the Presidente is a nice place to stay. Breakfast at the
rail is a nice plus for the Presidente. Keep in mind,
the Presidente also has noise issues with the little darlings
walking up and down the hall in those high heels.
Not to mention the assholes who slam their doors and
talk loud out by the elevators. Also, the noise can be a
problem if your room is facing the street, especially from
the vendors selling stuff, and bus and car horns.
Even on the 6th floor this was a problem, so if you can,
get an inner room, if you stay at the Presidente.
One last thing, take a cab at night. I know it is only a
couple of blocks between the Blue Marlin and Presidente,
but the street thugs appeared to be out in force last
week, and I didn't see any police after 9 at night.
Yes, the cab ride is a rip-off at 1,000 colones, but it
may be the best $2 for safety you will ever spend.
I've walked back to the Presidente many nights,
or should I say early mornings in the past, but not
anymore, once the sun goes down it is a cab.

This use to be posted as a possibility but now it is being posted as fact.

Does anyone have personal knowledge of a gringo being jailed, after defending himself from muggers, and the mugger was not also taken to jail :?:

Talk about straying from the topic of the thread

That does sound messed up... I would like to hear about actuall proof of this.

The Prez is where I stayed for a week in May, and I ran into the dress code problem the last night, but we dealt with it by making a cab trip to her place for her to change. It was worth it once I got her in the room and she got her clothes off!

I use to stay at the Presidente, but with all the rules,I now stay at the Sleep Inn. Perfect location and they never charge the $25 chica fee. I have now stayed there 3 times for a total of 41 days and it has been excellent.
The SL, not convenient, more like an old age home, in my view the owner is a nice guy, but that's it.

I am staying at the Presidente on my trip in early August.

I had to cancel a trip in late June because of dental problems. They cut me some slack and did not charge me a cancellation fee (first nights fee) because I was ill.

That told me a lot. I have only been to CR five times and have always stayed at the Presidente, so it isn't like I am a regular there. They did not have to cut me about $100 bucks worth of slack on the jacuzzi room.

A couple of months ago, one of my Houston hobby buddies named Squirrel88 had a problem or two having his chica turned away, and we have talked about it. The rules were just coming out at that time and we will both take care of the chica dress problem by carrying a couple of shirts. Since we are both at the Pres. the walk at 3am doesn't worry me. He is about 6'4" around 300 and I am 6'1" and 270. I don't think we will have much of a problem, and we also will be sober all the time. When we give our chicas a XXXL shirt to wear, it probably will go past their knees  and it would be hard for them to turn our chicas away.

I was a little league president a few years ago, and I learned then that people hate change. We changed some rules, but gave plenty of advance notice, which made things easier. I think the main problem with the Presidente was blindsiding people by turning away their chicas without any notice. Squirrle88 and I know what is going on and will be prepared.

If you see a chica in the Presidente lobby with a Houston Texan t shirt over her dress, she is mine for the night.

I put my 46R linen sportscoat on my date, which came down to her knees and covered her like an overcoat. The guard still turned us away. After our little trip - which was fine because we chatted in the cab - she came back in a black pants suit with a black full-lengh overcoat. (This was in May!) We got in then.

John, please post how the T-shirt works out. Hey, maybe we need to start keeping track of who the guard is. I presume they are not looking for a tip?

Personally, I'm not sure I'd want to take a cab to a chica's place for her to change.

As an alternative, I sent an email to the Sportsmen's a week ago & I'm still waiting for a response. I'm starting to think I may just stay at Morazan again when I go in September, I had zero problems last time I was there!

Anyone who wants to offer an alternative suggestion, feel free to recommend something different.

Look, they don't have the common sense to tell the difference between a local female attorney and a local femal newspaper editor from so called 'prostitutes'

why would I ever want to risk one of my female companion's feelings being hurt or being insulted by some idiotic policy?

At this point, it looks like one cannot enter the Presidente or News Cafe with any female without risk of being subjegated to insult.

That's not the B&B but the one in the casino, right? Do they charge a tica fee? Do the ticas have to register when you take them in? Can you bring more than one up at a time?

Well while I am not a veteran of mongering by no means... from what I have read on the thread, I understand one thing. THere are too many choices out there (like the chicas) that want our business for us to have to deal with this idiotic policy. It is the lifestyle and legality of CR that allows working women and for them to say no you cant come in, even with some guys trying to accomidate the dress code is beyond silly. I see for myself no reason to get upset over it or bow down to their will. SL just got my business and from what I understand I should be more then happy there. ANd there several other choices in SJ that are also VIP discount places that other CRT guys have been happy at.

To me its the Prez loss not ours, and as mucho gusto would say NEXT!!! so just say NEXT to the hotel.

Bobzilla to answer your comment on the email. if you go to the SL website they have a 800 # and I called yesterday. Spoke with Priscilla and got a reservation for Sept 17 - 21 no prob. Might be easier then waiting on a email???

Remember NEXT!!!!  (byby PRez)

Yeah it's a block from the BM. I haven't been to CR since '02, but when I stayed there, the room was nice, not luxurious or anything, but that's not really what I'm looking for anyway. No chica fee then, not sure about now. They do have to register with the front desk, who call you when she leaves to make sure she didn't swipe your wallet or whatever. A nice touch, IMO. I personally didn't try to bring up more than 1 at a time, but some guys I ran into there did. Again, don't know about now.

Staven: I would call them, but I had some additional questions that I wanted to ask Bill, so the email was addressed to him, it wasn't just a straight reservation. Hence the email.

I stayed at the Morazan over Memorial Day when the Amon Plaza was shut down for a day.

They take the girl's cedula or passport and tape your room number to it and keep it at the front desk. The one time I was too incapacitated to walk a girl out they did NOT call my room checking to see how I was.

The room (#415) was adaquate for a short-notice booking (same day). I think it was $55.

I had a girl call me at 5:30 on a Sunday to tell me she would be over at 7:30. I never got the message and consequently was not there when she arrived. We were both disappointed in that missed connection.

There was no chica fee.

Thanks for the update, Witling. Sucks re: your missed connection...last time I was there, I walked regularly from the BM or KL to Morazan; is it still safe enough to do that?

Are you talking about the same Morazan? It's literally in the same block, next door to the KL, only in the next block from the BM. If that walk is not safe, seems getting from the door of the BM to a cab could be dangerous.

Cyr,
I am from NY too, and I am used to walking home at 3am in my neighborhood. But NOT in CR. $3-4 taxi ride isn't worth your well-being or even your life.
If they're smart and don't carry around excess cash or even if they're stupid and careless, I don't think anyone should try and find out whether or not they'd get busted for resisting a mugger, or worse, lose that fight and get injured or killed.

Unless you're really cheap, I don't think paying $3-4 for a cab is that huge a price to pay to eliminate the risk of becoming a victim of crime regardless of how severe the incident is, at least not if its raining, you're drunk or you have a chica companion to concern yourself with.

That said, does anyone have personal knowledge of a gringo who didn't readily give up the $3-4 he had on him having any serious harm to his well-being or even his life? How many more people make that walk without anything at all happening to them? If you never carry more than $10-20 and your odds of being accosted are even as high as 1 in 10 that you'll wind with an empty wallet and maybe a punch in the stomach or a knock on the head and something substantially less that it would be more severe than that, then maybe $3-4 each way every time you go to the HDR after dark isn't such a great bargain for some people. Risk, cost, probability of various outcomes. It seems to me this is a calculation each person has to make for themselves
