Cyr,
I am from NY too, and I am used to walking home at 3am in my neighborhood. But NOT in CR. $3-4 taxi ride isn't worth your well-being or even your life.
If they're smart and don't carry around excess cash or even if they're stupid and careless, I don't think anyone should try and find out whether or not they'd get busted for resisting a mugger, or worse, lose that fight and get injured or killed.
Unless you're really cheap, I don't think paying $3-4 for a cab is that huge a price to pay to eliminate the risk of becoming a victim of crime regardless of how severe the incident is, at least not if its raining, you're drunk or you have a chica companion to concern yourself with.
That said, does anyone have personal knowledge of a gringo who didn't readily give up the $3-4 he had on him having any
serious harm to his well-being or even his life? How many more people make that walk without anything at all happening to them? If you never carry more than $10-20 and your odds of being accosted are even as high as 1 in 10 that you'll wind with an empty wallet and maybe a punch in the stomach or a knock on the head and something substantially less that it would be more severe than that, then maybe $3-4 each way every time you go to the HDR after dark isn't such a great bargain for some people. Risk, cost, probability of various outcomes. It seems to me this is a calculation each person has to make for themselves
