VB... I happen to agree with you, it sucks so much that I just have to stop on the way to Colombia to see if it got any suckier! :P

Hope to see you in July! I'll PM you closer to my trip.

Two things: First, I agree with ID's quote
Quote:
Not quite sure what era you are referring to exactly but I certainly did not find the same scene in the early 90's. Myself and my wingman frequently walked, alone or together at all hours of the night or very early morning, from Key Largo, Happy Days or the old NY bar to the Presidente without any fear of being mugged or accosted in any manner

We were all over the burg in the early 90s and never really had an issue with personal safety, although when I was first there on a TDY trip from Panama, we did have our cheap rental truck broken into.

The other issse was about the price of a KL Debs that Prolijio raised. To tell you the honest truth, I really don't remember if the price was 40 to fifty bucks as at the time or actually cheaper; I was living down there on a long term deployment with Caminos De La Paz, working at the embassy and sincerely, not paying for it, (that often). But that was in my younger and thinner days. So, I will stand corrected if someone else with a better memory can better remember the going rate at the time.

Timbones,

You were all over the burg & so was I at that time. I was never afraid of any place I traveled to there & like I said I never had any trouble but do know of others that did. I don't meant this in a negative way but you & ID are saying hey I didn't every have any trouble etc. & that I am sure is very true but believe me there was trouble to be had especially if you were drunk & stupid. I don't believe the Ticos put the bars over their windows in just the last few years  . Did you see these the first trip you made? I sure did. :P

Anyway I was warned by friends that lived there many years ago to be very careful & they had an experience in San Jose where someone pick pocketed their wallet. The one thing I will never forget is how some of these Europeans could not speak English all that well but they could use about every 4 letter word in the book to describe some of the scams the Ticas had pulled. Hey these were old guys with Ticas 30 years younger than them so what does one expect? Age old story that will never end. :D

When I first arrived, there was little violent crime but mainly petty theft but muggings did start happening out side of Key Largo & some made the Tico times. I never lived there but would spend many months each year & was a typical young horney guy that liked to sample what was offered. The best place I found was KL at that time so I would spend many nights checking this out. Since you lived there I would imagine you had regular Ticas more than P4P Ticas.

Can not have it both ways Zippy. Either it is " just like now" or it was "to a lessor extent back then"

You also said:

Quote:
You had a wingman & the guys that got robbed back then did not

what I actually said was:

Quote:
Myself and my wingman frequently walked, alone or together at all hours of the night or very early morning

I said before and repeat crime in San Jose in the early 90's was not the problem it is today.

ID,

You are right & my error. My bad. :? I did edit the post so it is less miss leading.
Quote:
It could be dangerous back years ago but worse now.

The way I originally made it sound was more like crime was the same which we all know it is worse now.

PS: You can have it both ways with the Chicas sometimes but it does have a price. :?

Many thanks.

I didn't bring this back just to fill up the server or boost my post count. But given the great growth in the Membership just in the last 2 years (am I right, Admin1?), thought it might be instructive to get a perspective on the past. Not just a "remember when?" or dusty nostalgia piece. Or maybe I am just self-important and ego-bound. Your call.
