I've had many great experiences like this in Costa Rica. The Ticos know how to have a good time and always make you feel like part of the family.

Also agree about the Philipinos, they know how to throw a party, lots of food and drinks and they are always great hosts. Oh yeah, must not forget the KAROKEE!!!!

What's wrong with in gringoland? Your neighbor has a party and doesn't bother inviting you over.

These people who don't make a whole lot of money were there to have fun. They know how to have fun. There are no ego trips. There was lots of laughter, food, music, dancing. I had a ball and unlike similar events in the US, I didn't want to leave when it was over.

Why do (we) gringos have so much ego? What you wear, your profession, the car you drive... SO important. We are so materialistic that we miss the best things in life that are free or relatively inexpensive: a good meal, a fiesta, some music and some dancing.

I guess these "third world" cultures are still backward compared to our wonderful society where we have the good sense to be suspicious of all newcomers...

kind of makes you wonder.

YO Party Pigs:

Shit, old Circus never gets invited to parties. It's just pitiful.

Before I saw the word karokee I was thinking it, because everything you said before it was right on.

My ex-GF's mother and father from the time I arrived would say eat! and I'd say I've already ate (maybe one or the other didn't see me eating) and then they'd say eat some more! Older Filopinas in the USA are not usually skinny.... not like they are back home.

Is karaoke an obsession with Filipinos? Have a neighbor who is from the Philippines and every time there is a neighborhood gathering she brings out her karaoke machine. Thought it was just something she liked but after reading this thread it seems it is more deep rooted in their culture then I knew.

"Some" can sing, but most can't though they try and they aren't embarassed about giving it a try over and over again.... 90% of them are average.

My ex-GF's family owns a filopino restuarant so on Friday nights it is sing night! At one point, I heard so so so many average singers that I thought the sound system must be bad. Then suddenly a shy young 16 year old sang from her parent's table and just blew me away to the point that I got one of those lumps in my throat (she lit that restuarant up!). It was a real joy hearing her sing after so much of the average.

Besides the restuarant, the Karokee machine is in every relative's home, they don't have to transport the same machine from place to place because everyone has one! :)

On my first trip to Costa Rica 2 things impressed me (not counting the chicas) and caused me to return so many times:
1. The women all hold their Babi*s.
2. No one absolutely no one asked what I did for a living. This included the crt guys I met.

The people are warm and generous, evaluating you as a person not on your "position". After about 5 trips I realized my grandparents from Naples would have been very comfortable in Costa Rica as I am now.
The last family reunion before my Grandmother died she said to me "my family have become strangers". I understood a bit about how she felt but meeting Tico families brought tears to my eyes because I understood exactly how she felt. In 2 generation everything was about power even amongst the family.

Twarag,

All these little points add to the real warmth that radiates from the life there. Amazing how people came with nothing & pulled together to form a great country out of literally nothing (USA) & in 200 years what happened that we don't work with each other any more but against everyone it seems. We use to trust & help each other & now we are afraid to stop & help others in an accident! We bitch about way too much & have forgotten how to be appreciative :( Sorry but that aint much of a life really! We all die & the dirt is thrown on top. Money or power is not going to change us into truly content creatures. How we feel about family & friends and them about us seems so important too me.. I love the old people & their stories! :P

I hear her! All too common to see good men talk about the ex wife with such distrust & hate. Then they talk about their kidds saying after all they did for them GEE DAD YOU ARE PHUCKED!! :( Well maybe dad isn't perfect but this is just plain sad. :(

The story of the USA reminds me of how many business partners workout. When they are building the business & times are tough they seem to suck it up pull together & get along but after they have made it & have it going their way (spoiled) they start getting petty about shit & it falls apart. :x

Filipinas and Cambodians are BIG on the karaoke. Yes, they love their food. Pansit, chicken adobo (my favorite). Even got tricked into eating snake one time. They told me it was fish...kinda tasted like fish. Ahh...don't miss it. More into the Latinas for now. TRUE asian culture is very different than ours. But, in a good way.
