That is exactly the key to the stress free life that we who have chosen to make this our permanent home have found. Learn to adjust to the Tico style of living and forget about trying to get them to become more gringo like.

Ticos lack the modern marvels of medicine that are common in the US but their life expectancy is about the same as a gringos. I believe the primary reason is the lack of stress in most of their life situations.

Glad to hear that some of you are planning your semi residency in Costa Rica. I would caution you to not make to many plans until we see what President Arias decides to due about immigration.

One trial balloon I hear being floated is that they will abolish the necessity of leaving every 90 days for a 72 hour period. However they would also institute a policy that anyone who spends more that 186 days a year in CR would have to acquire residency.

As I said this is only an idea being floated and may never come to pass but it points out how unsettled the immigration issue is at this time.

I am curious... how likely do you think it could be for a guy to come to CR to live, not with a lot of money, but willing to work and exist there like a regular Tico. I know the jobs don't pay much but what are some ways this kind of setting could work?

For me I like Zebra's plan the best. Simple is happiness to me. I like a nice life style like MG is thinking about but it comes at a higher cost too me than just money. You have the worries about it all trying to keep it all together which takes us back too stress but some of us thrive on this I believe. The more you have in CR the more stress you will have as so many are going to try to steal it when you leave this is a fact! The article Xman put up exemplifies all this it seems. When one can truly relax he maybe a different person & be able to carry on romances that are simply not possible at home. Your state of mind is just different when we are far from our worries.

Solamente in my opinion just forget that idea you will not be happy is my bet.

Warning: Medical science has proven that we do need some stress but you get this in CR just trying to make your selection of who you want to spend quality time with. :P

About the only way you could pull that off was to have some sort of Internet business that you could manage from anyplace with a puter and broadband capabilities.

Persons holding tourist visas or pensionado residency can not legally work. Many gringos have been working illegally in sports books, call centers, etc. however the new immigration bill provides very stiff penalties for employers who are found employing illegal workers.

A former neighbor of mine, who had worked for the sports books for 5 years, was told they had to let all the gringo workers without legal work status go because of the possible penalty's if caught. He had to marry a Tica to get residency and be able to work.

Actually in CR everything is handled by a lawyer. You never have to meet or even see the Tica if that is what you prefer. You pay the attorney, she gets a few bucks and signs the necessary paperwork, you sign the paperwork a few hours or days later and POOF you are married.

There's so much life in Costa Rica that you can't avoid death, even if you're just going for a walk to the market.

Or I could have gone out for a few beers in a bar where the women avoided eye contact with me in the fear that I might offer them a drink and then drive home alone after those 3 beers in mortal fear of being pulled over and arrested to the tune of $5000 in fines.

This is my fear at least 2 nights a week as I try to avoid the DWI TASK FORCE on my way home. BTW I lice in an area where there is no taxi service to take
