Does anyone know where I can get some golf lessons near San Jose?

You might want to contact the Hotel Herradura Golf Resort http://www.hotelherradura.com/golf/index.htm. They are located about halfway between the airport and downtown. Their website says they offer lessons but does not include further details. Their green fees run about $40/pp, cart rental is another $25 and if you don't want to haul down your clubs that is another $20.

Here is one free golf lesson CRT-style that I picked up from other members. If you need "cover" for your activities in CR, bring extra golf shirts with you on the day you go golfing and have photos taken with you in the different shirts that you can show others when you go back to prove you did nothing but go golfing everyday. It really cracks me up the ingenious lengths that the married guys go through to cover their tracks.

Just for clarification...the Herradura Hotel uses Cariari Country Club as it's golf course. Cariari is private but you can get on through the hotels or perhaps to pay for/take lessons there. Its the oldest most mature and exclusive club in San Jose and arguably in Costa Rica.

If you go the route of getting a member to take you there...guest fees run $50 plus club rentals if you need them, plus you need to hire a caddie for 5000 colones. It's a challenging course with many elevated greens and tees...lots of mature trees and sand...and a great climate zone for the valley.

The other main course in greater San Jose is Valle Del Sol in Santa Ana. A walkable but challenging 18 holes. They just had the Costa Rica national tournament there last week. It's a bit cheaper to play than Cariari...just say you're a resident and its $25 during the week and $35 on the weekend. Tourists pay a bit more, but I'm not sure what that number is. Riding carts are also extra but available. Caddies are also on call.

My first trip to CR, in 1998, there were six of us. We stayed at the Hotel Herradura
and played a round of golf at the Cariari for a nominal fee, if I'm
not mistaken. Actually, I don't remember much about the round, as
there was much drinking and anticipation of the night's activities at some
place I'd heard so much about...the Hotel Del Rey.

There's also a nine hole course called Los Reyes. caddies are used and it does have some hilly terrain. Overall it's a shorter track but has some nice old stlye flavor to it. Greens are smaller but very fast last time i played. They offer play to the public during the week. check out there web at www.losreyescr.com Calling before is recommended. There also is Los Suenos in Jaco area Marriott track will eventually be used in the Faldo school system in the future. Cariari is probaly best for lessons for they have a driving range . Stop and see Dave at Golf Costa rica he can help. they are located at the little mall as you enter Cariari complex.
