Royboy,
6000 miles at $.02 is $120 miles. It's not much of a deal but at least you've got a better chance of getting it than the cash. Don't be suprised if it takes 6 weeks to see it in your account.

As for using miles on Delta. I made reservations from ATL to SJO for May and August in Feb "just in case". It costs $50 to put the miles back into your account if you cancel but you get a refund on the $25 or $50 fee you paid when you booked it so it all works out. At least you've got a reservation. You gotta plan ahead.

The only disadvantage to booking over the phone is you lose the 1000 miles for using their online SkyMiles reservations.

Award Ticket
Get 1,000 bonus miles when you redeem Award Tickets online.

Click on the box that says "Redeem and Earn".

I have disliked Continental for many years, but lately have found their reward travel program to be the cheapest and most flexible. Their change fees are only $50. I think AA is $100. And, their "mile value" is usually the best.

Many factors should be considered before picking a preferred frequent flyer program (your home airport, where you mostly fly, benefits, etc.), but if Continental is one of your logical sources it's a good one.

Then stick with one and shoot for an elite level. At Continental if you are platinum elite you don't have any change fees for award travel, you get a 150% bonus miles on purchased flights plus you and your companion upgrade free to first class (space available basis). Even at the lowest elite level (by flying 5 trips a year to SJO) you'll earn a 50% bonus in miles and be able to upgrade yourself to first class thoughout the Americas (Not Hawaii, or southern South America).

Look into purchasing their Privilege pack, for $136, you'll get a $99 companion fare and $100 off coupons, 7,500 miles and passes for the Presidents clubs, and some other coupons w/ less value.

I just completed my trip using some AA miles. I total fee was like $30 for the taxes. The flight went off without a hitch. I even arranged to change one of my flights to an earlier arrival at no extra cost.

Flight to and from Miami to San Jose were almost completely filled. Only one or two empty seats remaining.

Location: I don't know where I'm going, but I sure know where I've been.

Also, Delta miles can be used on Continental and vice-versa.
