For you computer savvy guys......
I did a search, but did not get much useful info.
I'm thinking about getting a new Laptop (with all the bells and whistles) for the sole purpose of being able to get on the internet while I'm in CR, instead of having to use "house" computers or Internet Cafe's. Do most of the SJO hotels have "Wireless Internet", or is this unusual?

I saw on the SL website that they have wireless internet, but are they the only one? I just thought it would be nice to be able to bring my laptop to CR and have wireless internet availability, right in my hotel room. I don't know much about all this new technology we have available nowadays. Any advice on what type of laptop is better? Any info is appreciated.

As I told you a few weeks back, Flamingo Marina now has wireless internet in the rooms too.

I'd go with Dell. They are pretty reliable and the price isn't too bad. Best thing is you can customize them to your exact specifications. If you need help picking a good system to meet your needs, give me a call, I'll help you out.

I like toshiba, but whatever brand you get, make sure that xp professional is loaded for the operating system.

Toshiba is the best on the market for "everyday use".

Ive never had any problems connecting to wireless networks in SJO. Presidente has a network, but its not really "stable". Their network seems to crash alot.

SL has probably one of the best setup ones I have seen in San Jose.

You can also log-on to a few networks of random business's.

m g i just got a laptop for same reason ,i got it for 700 dollars and it is loaded . it is a compaq 2000v that i got from best buy about a month ago.i just took it to florida with me and it is one click and your on line. it like most of the new laptops have very good range

If you buy a Toshiba. there is a Toshiba service center in San Pedro at the Outlet Mall...very handy and also they have a very competant staff.

While we're on the topic of wireless and computer geeks I need some help if anyone cares to point me in the right direction troubleshooting a laptop. PM me por favor. Just bought a used HP from an amigo and have spent about 6 hrs. so far cleaning up his mess, (can't believe he didn't even have an anti-virus or ever get any MS updates) but now just having some conflicts I can't figure out or get in to change settings. Maybe something simple to someone familiar with XP and computers.

Hey MG I don't know a whole lot about about Laptops but if money is not a big factor most guys that have a Sony Vaio seem to really like them too, (they must cost so much for some reason). A gringo had a new one at the BM a while back with the large wide-screen showing pics of the chicas & bartenders and is was awesome.

Advantages of a VAIO.... Hmmmm Since I was the idiot who spent twice as much for the phucking thing, I better come up with some advantages...

Actually only thing that makes a VAIO different is some of the newer series make the smallest thinest units made great for traveling and the XBRIGHT screen is the best quality viewing of not only any notebook but any monitor as well... As far as the internal workings not worth twice the price folks even if it has a Pentium processor.

Thats the unit I had, before I switched to the Vaio, & I believe Florida has it with great success.


with many rebates has a screen similar and close to the Xbright and is half the price of the Vaio.. Slightly heavier and bigger but for 1/2 the price you can't go wrong.

With technology changing every day and notebooks being worthless in 18 months, in retrospect, I'd buy the cheaper next time and upgrade in a year and a half.

JUST MY Opinion as I had the compaq returned it for the Vaio and aside from the size found litterally no difference in performance.... NOTE VAIO comes with XP professional VS home addition.

Thanks for all the info guys. I've had a Toshiba for years, and I've had good luck with it, but it's got Windows 98 on it. That's when I bought it, so it's a dinosaur now. I'll probably stick with the Toshiba, especially since DG said I can get it serviced at the San Pedro mall.

It is difficult to say what is wrong with that HP - lots of possibilities. It might be better to reload from the beginning. Depending on the crap he allowed on that laptop, some is virtually impossible to eliminate. Most of those toolbars and advertising popup stuff is programmed to clone itself upon it being deleted so it really is next to impossible to delete it - if this is what you have.

I'm not sure where you live, but if you don't have a copy of XP, the best way to get one is craigslist.org. How quickly you can get a copy depends on how busy your area's version of craigslist is (I can get a copy in less than a hour). I put an ad on craigslist saying that I need a copy, because my HD went bad so I'm not asking for an extra (illegal) copy, just one to replace my copy which I paid for when I purchased my laptop. Technically, the guy that makes a copy for me is breaking the law. In the ad, I say that I'm just paying for the labor it requires to copy the software for me (I offer 30 dollars).

One thing about loading XP on a laptop is that you'll probably need a few specially designed drivers for your laptop that doesn't come stock with XP. You'll have to do a little research on your laptop manufacture's website. No worries though, once XP is loaded, you can get connected to the internet to download what you need. 2 things that most need are video and audio drivers.

Hey D2864 Thanks for the tips, and Gamlinman's post on the Vaio and Compaq is some good info.
With the help of Admin1 and Californicationdude (and plenty of coffee) I have it up and running smoothly, it was quite a mess. Look forward to browsing CRT from the BM one day soon hopefully.

I bought a toshiba M55-s1001 just before I left for CR this trip...
( on sale at office depot for $499.00) with intigrated 801 wireless...

fired it up when arrived at apartment ( complex has wireless interne) and the puppy connected all by itself.. !!!

so far found it to be a good value for the $$ only came with 256 ram which has not been a big problem so far...but I did find a 512 chip on net for $68.00 and ordered so will install when I get home for a total of 756 ram..

BTW... installed SKYPE and had a USB phone and now have great phone connection back to US for a few cents a minute... played with the darn thing and even have my US phone calls being transfered to my CR cell phone... on 2nd thought, I don't want to be that available... will divert to voicemail...!!
