I always have to stop in at Calichies Wishbone for the spicy tuna sticky rice bowl when i am in Jaco. Damn that stuff is the bomb sure it is priced for gringos but I dont really care. I am also gonna find that little taco joint 3rd world was talking about. I could care less about steak when im down south with all the killer seafood around.

That's Bubba's Tacos in Jaco. And you got that right about the poky. I have it 2-3 times a week. You do get a craving for steak once in a while living here though.

I agree with Seahwak re: El Chicote. It is in La Sabana Norte about 4 blocks from the ICE building. I plugged it before on another thread months ago. Mostly a TICO joint I guess. Clean and fairly good sized. We have never had a bad steak there. Wile Coyote

Thanks to Seahawk and Wilecoyote.

Tonight LVSteve, Paigowtom and myself tried El Chicote in Sabana.

We all thought the food was very good, the service good and the outdoor patio were we ate was a very nice setting.

I had the baby beef and was one of the best beef meals I have had in CR.

Definitely would recommend it.

Clearly avoiding pirate cabs is always the wisest choice. Unfortunately many restaurant have deals with pirates and call them when you ask them to get a taxi for you.

I understand your stance on Cafe Mundo but I feel you should contact management and let them know why you will never return. They may not be aware of the situation and will take action against the waiter. If that is the case you may save someone else from being a victim. If they are aware of the situation you really have lost nothing and maybe they will realize that such complicity can cost them business.

I totally agree............Let them know what you went through so they know. Who knows what business they have going and what they may do to change things in the future.

Circus how the hell would you know about beef in CR? As if they have beef in the garbage piles at the zoo.

By the way the toothless fruit lady at El Mercado said to say hi and misses sucking on your hairy ear lobe :P

While it may be true that there are no steak places that compare to some steak houses in the US that serve USDA prime beef there certainly are some very good Argentinian restaurants that serve steak that is as good or better than the average US steak house.

Remember I am not comparing them with places like Ringside in Portland, Bob's in Dallas, Mo's in Milwaukee, etc but with the regular steak houses that serve USDA choice beef

Costa Rican beef is horrible but there are restaurants that import a quality steak.

Naturally YMMV

I have eaten lots of beef coming from a "beef" state, Texas. The best beef that has ever graced my palate was found in La Parilla Argentina in Escazu... like VB said.

YO I.D.

Your statement is a fair one and I agree but it is difficult to find a place in CR even on the family steak house level. And BTW, I'll throw the "Outback" chain into the group of average or less. Their quality has really gone down while their prices have gone up.

Berk......well, you must be very easy to please when it comes to steak but most importantly you enjoyed it and that's what counts.

And HolaB: Quit messing around with my sure stuff you longhorn slut. I can't believe you're still in CR enticing those chicas with your Texas tube steak. You must be hiding from those rich oil women that are chasing you in Texas. Did you take those steaks down with you and put them on the grille like you were going to do?

For the record: Old Circus with pick up the check for any CRTer and his wingman or chica if they introduce me to a quality steak in CR. Yep, that dinero will certainly stay in the bank.

I agree with Circus about the decline in quality at Outback (Itazku Plaza). Two years ago, I actually thought they were serving USDA beef. On my most recent visit (January 2007), the chorizo was indistinguishable from the average SJO restaurant.

It may well be that only the Marriott still serves USDA prime beef.

as part of my research before moving here, i went to the outback to compare menu prices to those in the states. i had a conversation with the manager about the meats and he told me all outback meats come from the central distribution in houston. the meat i was eating in seattle came from the same place as the meat in escazu. i was last there in january for a prime rib dinner. the quality was good. the price of $40 was high, but every now and then i need the prime rib.

YO Ram:

Did you say....$40 ?? Prime Rib and in CR ?? Holy smoly. That would be high in the states. Hard to digest that price unless you had a few beverages, desert and a fondle from the server. Of course ribs can be frozen sent and cooked OK but it's still not "steak." $40. Geezzzz

Where is that book I read on how to live in CR on $20 a day. Oh! An amigo of mine wrote it several years ago but he died from malnutrition. lol

It has been explained to me that the CR beef source are those big white bulls (Brhamas?) with the long horns that you see grazing as you travel the country.

Apparently the breeds we have in the US cannot be raised here because the consistently wet ground gives 'em "hoof rot."

With rainy season just around the corner I find myself thinking that I am greatful that the chicas don't develop "crotch rot."

I had asked the waiter for the taxi , so he called his friends to rob me. He parked I thought a long way from the entrance. So management wouldn't notice. So it was probably between the waiter and his buddies. Any chance these guys have to make a little extra dinero, then they're gonna take it.
