I'm planning the first trip down and was wondering if this "agenda" makes sense. Recognize that as soon as I get down there the "agenda" gets tossed away, but I like to plan a little ahead:

I'm arriving the 10th at about 12:30. I figure to spend one night at HDR or Amon Plaza. I'm thinking about heading up to the volcano the 11th (possibly spending the night up there somewhere) is Arenal far from La Paz? Then to Marriott Los Suenos (Playa Herradura) through the 14th. Spend the day/night of the 14th back in SJ at either Amon or HDR and fly out on the 15th. Is this too ambitious travel wise? Not sure how far everything is from everywhere, if I should plan on renting a car and if I am going to regret spending a day (or what it takes) driving all around on crappy roads.

Also, I understand the craps table at Amon Plaza has been removed. Any casino have dice?

I think your agenda is way to ambitious for the amount of time you have.

If by La Paz you mean the waterfalls they are northeast of San Jose. Volcano Arenal is northwest of San Jose. I would pass on going to Playa Herradura as that is southwest of San Jose. You are trying to go in 3 different directions in just a few days.

For your first trip I would stick close to the gulch and take a few day trips to different attractions close by that interest you and devote your nights to trolling for pink snapper.

I agree I would either make it SJ and the beach or SJ and the volcano. La fortuna waterfall is close to the volcano. It would take you probly 5 or 6 hours to go from the volcano to the beach you are talking about. I like having a rental car However alot of ppl avoid them.

I assume you know that Los Sueños is grossly overpriced at about $315/night (w/ tax) for a standard room or closer to $400/night for a better room. I would not pay $300+/night in CR.
