is it o.k to bring herb supplements into costa rica ( milk thistle, gymnema, chroium etc.) without hassel at customs

Yes,,no problem. You can pretty much bring almost anything you want into CR :P I carry anything I don't care to be "looked" at on my person. They only check luggage, and that is even a stretch.

I do not know what sets off their xray machine check of luggage but my experience as well as what others have told me is that whenever they ask you to open a bag they ask if you have anything organic in your bag.

It would appear they are more interested in keeping out organic material than anything else.

Really now, never have been a problem in the 3 years I have come into town. And I bring a lot everytime, in my luggage! And you can still carry on your person if you even think that supplements are going to be a problem. I have never seen them put a person through the scanners.

Two different purposes. Inbound is a customs procedure outbound is a security procedure.
