One of my amigas tells me there is a train that one can ride for the fun of it somewhere in Costa Rica. Anyone ever heard of this "train"?

I've read of the train that used to run to the east coast way back when but believe the earthquakes took out the tracks and it runs no more?

There were two separate train routes in Costa Rica.

The Atlantic route had its station in San Jose very near Hospital Calderon and ran to Limon. The tracks were heavily damaged in an earthquake and never repaired.

The Pacific route station is at Avenida 20 Calle 2. It has freight trains that run to the Port at Caldera. It also has occasionally had a tourist train that offers passenger sight seeing tours to Caldera then a bus to Puntarenas for a few hours then back to the train for the return to San Jose. When it runs it operates on Saturday and Sunday. I believe it is currently in hiatus.

Commuter train service has been restored for about the past six months. The trains run between Pavas and San Pedro, using the Pacific route station, during morning and evening rush hours. The service is going to be extended to Heredia also. The first leg of that route to Tibas is expected to start up in about a month.

The Pavas train starts at the old Estacion Ferrocaril just northeast of the east end of Parque National. I know because it run by Blasting The Phucking Horn behind my apartment in Barrio Escalante starting at 5:30 AM daily (well weekends I don’t remember it seems like I get a break. And Thursday beginning Semana Santa it was earily quiet in the morning). Multiple runs per day I am usually at happy hour when it finally quits.

Hahaha there are no crossing guards that I know of so I think The Horn is constantly going off all the way to Pavas. Even the busses are not going to contest passage and it goes slow so everybody just get the hell out of the way…

Mass transit in Costa Rica! Ya gotta love it I have to say I believe it probably spews out a little less fumes than all the busses it would take to lug that many Ticos

Where is the closest stop to the gulch or Barrio Amon? Where does it let you off in Pavas? I've seen the train mentioned in various places and knew of a little work on the tracks around Sabana Sur. I could see being an occasional customer in either direction if there is a convenient stop. San Pedro has lots to do and I know people in Pavas.
