I didn't quote K Psychman so not sure why you refer to K. I quoted Scottp, but no offense to him, he is probably a great guy as well, I am just commenting on something he said.

I'm positive about the situation in CR (that there isn't very many ugly incidents) and yes I'm negative about the notion that the ugly America attitude is rampant in CR. I don't think it is a bad as some make it out to be, but that is just IMHO.

Overall, I think Americans, considering the environment we party in in Costa Rica, behave well. It could be much worse. I'm thankful that it isn't any worse, because it really could be much much much worse.

my bad..sorry

Ugly Americans pop up far too often in places like the Blue Marlin.Anouther of the reasons I don't go there much.It is better out of the gulch. I have seen the same type behaviour in Domincan Republic. I ejoyed my trip to Peru as there were much fewer Americans and far less of that.rbc100

SJ is really not a city - just a big town and its very easy to get around. Our taxi drivers not only know the way, but they know the best way. Everything I learned about getting around was from taxi drivers.
As you know, there are addresses and there are tico addresses. If you tell a driver you want to go to Ave. 9 and calle 3B, you might get a dumb look but if you tell him you want to go 100 meters north of INS, he'll take you right there. Knowing the landmarks are more important than knowing the address. So, to gringos, sometimes it seems that the driver dosen't know the way, but to a tico, he does.
Also, many gringos don't speak Spanish well and when you add that to the mix, you have a problem communicating where you want to go.
Just my 2 colones.

Steve, I'm going to respectfully disagree with you. In my last trip to SJO I knew enough not to use street addresses. He's what I ran into in the space of one week

1) Not one cab driver knew where Sportsmans was.
2) 5 cab drivers in a row did not know where the Argentine steak house was
3) 1 cab driver did not know where the Clarion - Plaza Amon was
4) It got to be a running joke with my wingman there, because we asked every cab driver we got into a car with if he could take us to the Costa del Sol. Not one driver all week could take us there. Incidentally, no one at the front desk of HDR knew where it was either.
5) The big kicker. 2 drivers did not know where HDR was. My buddy and I think one of them might have been a replacement driver though

D2864, the stories are rampant about North Americans. The girls could tell you stories for hours. the media would avoid offending their biggest source of tourist dollars too. An hour at night in the DR will illustrate the drunken idiot point a dozen times over.

That being said, I do not believe that most North Americans going to CR contribute to the worst portion of that statistical curve. Still, all in all, I make the distinction between not behaving badly and behaving well, and believe me, so do the girls, and most guys do not fall into the latter category.

The point u made about having small bills is so true...also i try to have as many of the 500 coins as that is what most cab rides are ...my first trip i just layed back and watch how things were done , second trip i learned fast as being nice to the people who"s country i was a guest in made a big difference in how people treated me.Now after 5 trips i guess this is my true vacation place and i dont want it to be ruined, on my last trip i was close to getting kicked out of the blue marlin ...maybe for ever , i was playing carb.poker as i always do, its a great cheap game and if you get lucky you can hit for some cash (2 trips ago i hit for 1700.00 in one hand ,4 nines dosnt happen very often) and drink for free, well a local guy was sitting next to me and we were playing and shooting the shit and my hand was crap and i fold it , and he shows me he has 2 pair(i seen it) and as we are chatting the dealer takes his bet and puts his cards in the dead pile ..i yell hey he has a player ..take the card and put his hand back, this does happen some times and when the dealer makes the mistake they can find the cards by back counting , any way they refuse to do it and i just blow up ....its not my hand , but what is right is right ...they make me look like the bad guy , i am pleading for this guy and the pit boss (lady ) calls the door men on me and tell me i am done for the nite....i am a little drunk and my mouth keeps going....and now they are leading me out the door ..i guess i was very close to being banned, i returned later that nite , but not to gamble , just hanging out at the bar ...they knew i was there as i could feel the eyes on me...so i left , the next day , when i came to the table the little group of pit bosses huddle up and said everything was cool for me to play. But the good news is that rican guy got his money back , they didnt pay him the winning amount just his first bet (3000 col) but at least i felt a little better ...but when i look back on it , i was very close to being banned from the play ground...

That's an amazing figure - I've been to the HDR many times with my friends until the wee hours and hardly ever see drunken idiots. Every now and again, I've saw some guys get a little loud for a few minutes and then everything goes back to normal. I call this having a good time, but maybe I'm supposed to be classifying this as a bunch of drunken idiots.

What makes this subject difficult is that "bad behavior" to you might be "acceptable behavior" to others. Not everyone is going to define it the same.

Check out those rap videos - there are a lot of people who will defend that crap one way or another.... calling women stupid and hoes... that's acceptable behavior in some minds (crazy, eh?).

There had to be a misunderstanding - this is impossible!

Some directions for the taxi;
1. Sportsmans Lodge - 200 metoros norte Del Resturant Cafe Mundo en Bario Amon.
2. If you are talking about Resturant Parilla Argentina, it would be as follows. En Escazu 300 metors este de Perimecardo.
3. The new name of the hotel is Hotel Clarion, the old name is Amon Plaza. Its on Avenida 11 crose del Hotel Dunn Inn or 100 metors norte Del Zona Blue.
4. Casa Del Sol is on Avenida Central across from the Buses. Or 200 mtrs Sur de Hotel Del Rey y 50 mtrs Este.
5. Hotel Del Rey - If they don't know, just tell them Circa De El Parque Marazan and then just walk a block.

Hope this helps,
LVSteve

D2864, feel free to disagree with me on this point. I realize that this is a case of personal perception but I'm not rigid or conservative by any stretch, and I stand by my view of the matter. I will qualify this somewhat. The young bucks are definitely louder and drunker than the guys over, and seem to feel that they have a license to do whatever they want if they're in groups. I saw so many rolling latina eyeballs that I thought I was in a bowling alley. They don't like the loud, drunk guys. The agreement was almost universal, and I'm an inveterate people watcher, so I noticed lots of them. Of course timing is everything, and you and I are certainly seeing different things at different times. As for the taxi drivers and the HDR, no joke! I couldn't believe it.

LVSteve, I know where this stuff is, and I refer to landmarks as well when giving directions (if necessary), but thanks for the thought and the attempt to help.
