Some good places mentioned. One reliable place is La Cascada in Escazu. The baby beef is their best plate.

What restaurant is that? From your directions sounds like it is near the ICE building. A name would help

There is a really good steak in the food court at Mall San Pedro. Can't remember the name, maybe something with NY in it. Had the rib eye or the NY strip and it was really good. Yeah, go figure in the mall.

I walked out of Cafe Mundo last year, because of the lack of good service. I ended up at J.R. for ribs.

Toadtamer,

I can't help but agree with you. In two visits over two years' time, I noticed that the service at Cafe Mundo had gone way downhill.

Also, the staff there apparently has some sort of distaste for mongers and our temporary lovers. Although I encountered a number of couples there, a gringo with a Latina (hard to say what percentage was a p4p relationship), I noted that the wait staff were not inclined to be friendly toward these couples.

The food however was first-rate and didn't disappoint. I just wish they'd get their stuff back together as regards service.

Has anyone else come to the realization that service in San Jose, whether at bars, hotels, restaurants or MP's is considerably below the quality of what we typically enjoy in the U.S. and Canada? Maybe it's just me, but the service in general doesn't seem very good. Yes, I am accustomed to waiting a half hour after a meal to get the check; I'm referring more to the general lack of friendliness and competence. Curious to see if anyone else shares this observation?

That's just because the waiter/waitress is jealous, because they see a blind guy getting more 'tail than they are!!!

I agree with the service (or lack thereof) issue in CR. I remember a trip we took to Hooter's a few months ago (Me, Twarag, RuffNutz and a couple of newbies staying at the SL). There must of been at least 10 waitresses, and only 3 or 4 tables of guests. The service was TERRIBLE. I think they had a certain amount of resentment, seeing 5 guys with 5 chica's, all having a good time.

But when the bill came, Twarag took care of the propina. Big Ph*cking Goose Egg! The waitress looked at him, and actually expected a tip! So I think he told her to buy some shares of stock in Enron Corp! That's the only tip she deserved!

Mucho Gusto

One of the things that take some getting use to in CR is that you must ask for the check. In the Tico culture bringing you a check without your requesting it is the equivalent of asking you to leave and could be perceived as an insult.

That's interesting. I never knew that, but now it all makes sense. It seems that I ALWAYS have to ask for the check, no matter where I am. Now I understand why. ID, thanks for that info.

Most Americans are used to quick, slam bang, thank you Mam' service. That just dosen't happend here. You have to get used to waiting. Its just not the same. They don't want to rush you so they can set up another table. Just go with the flow and enjoy or as my daughter says, Chill!

I took a DR girl to Cafe Mundo to eat and then asked the waiter to call a cab for me. After 10 minutes he came to the table and told us the taxi was here. It was a young tico and he had a reasonable nice car but not an official taxi. It didn't like the way he looked at me, but I felt that CAFE MUNDO surely wouldn't set me up. We got in and my girl told me that he didn't know where the HOTEL PRESIDENTE was located. :?: She and the tico driver were yelling at each other in rapid fire spanish. We start heading back towards downtown when suddenly he makes a quick left turn  I knew then it was serious. My girl stuck her finger in the back of his neck and started yelling at him. So he made a uturn around the block and when we got into heavy traffic we both got out of the taxi-car and walked back to the Presidnete. I haven't returned to CAFE MUNDO for this reason. I have always avoided pirate cabs for this reason.

Everybody learn some Spanish. Any little bit helps you establish yourself in this situation. I cringe when I know guys get in taxis totally at the mercy of the chica interpreting. If you know nothing, learn just basic phrases. How are you? How much? Etc. If you know a little, always learn a little more. Sometimes it's faking it. Go to a taxi, boldly speak what you know and they won't see you as as much of a mark. And if you can ask them a few questions, like about futbol, they don't tend to see you as the gringo sucker. BUT, these situations CAN happen to any of us.

Clearly avoiding pirate cabs is always the wisest choice. Unfortunately many restaurant have deals with pirates and call them when you ask them to get a taxi for you.

I understand your stance on Cafe Mundo but I feel you should contact management and let them know why you will never return. They may not be aware of the situation and will take action against the waiter. If that is the case you may save someone else from being a victim. If they are aware of the situation you really have lost nothing and maybe they will realize that such complicity can cost them business.
