I am interested in the view points, no matter how candid, of all the CRT members that have either legal resident or 'perpetual tourist' (for want of a better term) on how they manage on a day to day basis such matters as mail, insurance, renting/buying real estate.....etc...

I understand that there is more than one way to skin the proverbial cat, and I like to hear all the different view points....

thanks to all that have posted....I've already learned two/three different options to receive/send mail and packages

The original poster asked for information on the Association's mail service which I've used for the past 2 years without incident. They set up a PO box in Miami for you and assign you an "SJO" number which must appear just after your name. True, you do have to stop by thier office to get your mail but I don't find that inconvenient - its on the way downtown for me. For further on this service, contact Edwardo or Arturo at the main number.

PS: You do have to pay when you pick up your mail - anywhere between 200 colones and 2,000. Depends on how much mail I get.

Is there a place in San Jose, preferably close to downtown where you can rent a PO BOX to receive mail from the US?

I've got some things I want to send and need to make sure they are received so I don't want to chance it with the Postal system.

Does anybody have a website?
What's the annual/monthly cost?

By definition you would have deal with the Postal system to rent a PO Box.

If you are asking about a private mail service there are a number of them. The one I use is Aerocasillas, www.aerocasillas.com. As far as I know their nearest office to the gulch is in Zapote/Curridabat area directly across from the National Registry. A short bus ride from downtown.

They have a number of plans from a couple bucks a month which gives you a Miami address and you pay for each piece of mail when you pick it up to other plans that cost more but have a free allowance of weight included each month. I have the lowest cost one of those plans and it costs $12.00 a month, if you pay monthly, and I very very rarely (twice in 3+ years) exceed the monthly weight limit. My plan includes delivery to my home in the monthly fee.

Has anybody ever used Mail Boxes Etc in Costa Rica?

They offer mailbox service. They have an "occasional plan" where there is no monthly fee but they charge $15/kilo to receive mail. A sort of "Pay-per-package" type of deal. You get a Miami address and then they redeliver to the MBE in San Jose and the recipient picks it up there, I don't think they deliver to your house. It seems high at $15/2.2lbs, without home delivery, but I guess with no monthly fee they have to make up the diference somehow. Plus, I may only ship once every 2 months, so it makes sense.
