I have read and heard different views on this matter....
however, on my first two trips, I made sure I tipped the cleaning lady 1000 colones (about $2) the first day and instructed her to always leave at least 4 towels extra (and extra toilet paper) for use by my little darling visitors.....
everyday after that, I would leave $1 to $2 for the cleaning lady on a daily basis instead of at the end of the stay....
one my first visit, at the Presidente, the cleaning lady seemed appreciative....
on my second visit, at a lower end Tico Hotel, the cleaning lady thought I was Moses and told me I was the only one that left her a daily tip...she took real good care of the extra towels/tp supplies....
at a western style hotel like the Presidente or SL, $1-$2 a day is small when compared to the price of the room.....at a lower end Tico style hotel where the room rates are much, much lower, a one or two dollar a day tip is a much higher percentage/rate....nevertheless, it's only a couple of bucks extra and seems to keep the supply of extra towels and tp coming...
if you're lucky, 4 extra towels a day won't be enough.....on my second trip, I had days when the little darlings would lay waste to entire rolls of tp and not leave a dry towel in the room (I'm into cluster f*cks)
anyway, that's my opinion....let's see what some of the Vets have to say
