Wal-Mart says it will create
6,000 jobs in two years

By the A.M. Costa Rica wires services

U.S. retail giant Wal-Mart has announced it is increasing its presence in Central America, creating 6,000 new jobs in Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica.

The company announced Wednesday, it has now acquired 51 percent of Central America's biggest retailer, Central American Retail Holding Co., or CARHCO. Wal-Mart said it will replace the name CARHCO with Wal-Mart Central America, but otherwise will make no major changes in the stores.

Wal-Mart acquired 33 percent of CARHCO in September. Financial terms for the latest acquisition were not released. Wal-Mart says its expansion will create more than 6,000 jobs over the next two years, as well as stimulate export of local products.

These developments follow the September announcement that Wal-Mart had purchased a one-third interest in Central American Retail Holding Co. (CARHCO) with 363 supermarkets and other stores in Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. As part of the agreement, Wal-Mart will acquire additional interests over time in CARHCO, including interests toward achieving majority ownership in the company.

And we will continue to deliver savings to customers in 2006 with plans to open as many as 230 new international stores. Currently, Wal-Mart International operates over 2,200 retail units and employs more than 450,000 associates in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom.

Seems they have followed up on that earlier plan as this article says they now own 51% of CARHCO. CARHCO owns the company that operates in Costa Rica as Pali/Mas x Menos/Hippermas.

The article quotes Wal-Mart as saying:

Quote:
Wal-Mart said it will replace the name CARHCO with Wal-Mart Central America, but otherwise will make no major changes in the stores.

Remains to be seen if they will replace Hipermas with Wal-Mart stores or just introduce Wal-Mart merchandise and merchandising techniques to the chain. Will be interesting to see what happens with the new Hipermas they are building next to Hospital CIMA.

It's a natural fit, Latin consumers flock to the Walmart stores in my fair city. You'd be surprised how many pretty latinas you will find there. Another good reason beyond the cost savings.

Wal-Mart Breaks Ground For New Super Store in Escazú

Earth moving has begun to clear the site for a new Hipermas store in Escazú. Wal-Mart Costa Rica says it will invest us$12.5 million dollars in the latest "hipermercado"...The new building will be 6.500 square metres situated across from the Trejos Montelegre shopping store, facing the autopista.

There you go Lee, apply for that transfer and buy that condo from your tattooed real estate agent/sex worker friend...

That store has been in the works for years. It was almost complete and ready to move in the merchandise when the rear ground gave way and fell into a ravine. After a series of attempts to fix the problem it was announced that they would build on the other side of the pista. EPA took over the sight and were able to salvage it using a smaller store.

The interesting part of the article was that it stated this Hipermas will be built more like a US Wal-Mart and less like a Hipermas and will carry the Wal-Mart name.

If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, looks like a duck..It is a duck

So I guess there is a Wal-Mart in Costa Rica's future

Thank you for thinking of me. If I can get them to give me a three-year out of country assignment they would give me a place to live I would not need little miss tattooed.

I'm not thrilled to see the biggest US employer whom treats employees like $hit open stores everywhere and become what it is on the backs of tax payers.

The only thing I can say is: I'm glad they will not be able to get out of paying health insurance and retirement to it's CR employees because it's the law there. Even though it's govmnt plans still they have to pay into them.

Not sure what the opening of one Wal-Mart in CR, or more if they covert all the Hipermas stores, will due to PriceSmart stock. Would be willing to bet however that it will severely impact the Escazu PS since it only about 2 km away.
