Midway through my 30 day tour-of-duty in San Jose, I usually get a hankering for some American fast food. Over the course of the past few days, I decided to go on a crusade to sample the fast food restaurants on Central Avenida; McDonald's, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Burger King, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut. I am pleased to report, that in my opinion, all these establishments were up to U.S. standards. The food tasted the same as in the U.S. The prices seemed the same as the U.S.....or possibly lower. The young employees at all the establishments were friendly, helpful and enthusiastic, and seemed genuinely proud to be working at these pillars of Americana. I noticed McDonald's had the Dollar Menu and KFC had the Value Menu, same as the U.S. The restrooms in all the establishments were clean and well stocked with paper, soap, etc.

I'm not sure why but I've always felt that the chicken at KFC taste better here than in the states. Is it because they don't import the chicken but use local chicken? Anybody know?

While I do not know the specifics of how KFC handles the procurement of chicken in the USA or CR I can say that chicken as a whole is better tasting in CR than in the USA.

I believe the primary reason is that chicken in CR is not frozen but rather delivered fresh to both restaurants and markets. In the US the majority of chicken you buy has been frozen at some time in its journey from farm to market.

Try Pollo Campero which is right next to McDonalds in the Plaza de Cultura. Not a U.S. chain, but much better chicken than KFC in my opinion.

Everyone will have their own opinion on this but I think AS chicken is the best off all the chains in CR for fried chicken.
