I would guess anybody who has been to the Del Rey and especially if they've stayed at the Hotel President knows Sean, the shoe-shine guy.
He's about 26, married with 2 K*ds and usually wears a suit while carrying his shoe shine box.

Why don't we hire him to work as an escort from the Del Rey to the Prez?
He knows everybody around that area and could not only warn us but identify them if anything happened. He can also keep the other beggers and riff-raff away.

If he wants to carry his own concealed machete that's up to him.
Anytime you use him as an escort you give him 1000c. That's $2. Anybody have any thoughts on this?

Not a bad idea. For a thousand colognes I guarantee a couple bigger guys hanging outside will walk with you to the Pres, no problem.

Witling,

Definitely something to consider...a CRT Security Force. Between our collective knowledge of who's who in the gulch, we might be able to muster up a list of potential candidates and post it in the forum as a sticky. Several hundred C or even a mille is a small price to pay for some extra insurance while strolling through the gulch late at night. It would also alleviate the need to deal with unreasonable, obstinate taxistas for a one or two block ride.

I will be happy to pay such a fee. I can't believe some smart Tico hasn't already started it up.

You would think Big John would jump on the chance to have one of his security guys provide that service for a fee. Even he has to realize not everyone can stay at the HDR and the overflow needs to feel safe returning to their hotel. I think it would be a great opportunity for some of his security guys to make a few bucks on their day off from the HDR.

What is the problem with walking from the BM or KL to the Presidente?
I have made the walk over 50 times between 11 PM to 2 or 3 AM alone or with a chica in the past 14 months. Had only one drugee demand money and I told him in my limited Spanish "chinga tu madre" the chica I was with laughed and he went away talking to himself.
For 1000 colonnes I'll walk you back. Back in town March 14 for another 16 nites at the Presidente.
The only thing you have to fear is fear itself.

Since you're not a VIP member you don't know- but there's a post in the VIP section from a member that just got robbed by 2 guys with machetes while making that walk.

I think a long term solution is to use the power of CRT to negotiate with the various businesses involved to provide area security. The collective buying power of the membership is an incredible strong incentive and the cost of armed security and the insurance is not prohibitive, especially if the collective membership shy away from places that don't provide good security. If there is not a gulch business association linking the various businesses then they should think about forming one.

Of course, that is just my humble opinion, I could be wrong.

This "power of CRT" is raised occasionally mostly in relation to controlling the price paid to chicas at the BM. The truth here is the same as there. CRT is a blip on the San Jose monger scene and has no influence on pricing or anything else in the overall picture of the gulch.

Wouldn't it just be easier to take a taxi for 600?

You know, you can still get jumped even with a bodyguard, there are no guarantees. (If shit goes down, hopefully your bodyguard is not running in the other direction.)

Or a machete, or a gun.
