Hey I really don't get all this sickness because I have been going for years & never get sick but over 50% of Latinas I call are always saying they have gripa but the working & upper class Ticos I know never complain about this. When I called some Latinas & they started the gripa talk I just laughed & said how can so many be sick like this? I was laughing when I saw this thread thinking boy does this have an echo to it.

TP I commend you on your depth of study with these Ticas. You pay a lot attention to details & believe me in your future this will pay off well for you I bet!

I just wonder if all this gripa is a by product of neglect & depression from some & this is a way of getting attention? But I have seen the signs & symptoms of some of this that are real. You guys living there do you get the gripa more than when you lived in the States?

Nope! She says she's sick and so are her maids in waiting. Damn debutantes!

I'm not a doctor, but think this is an easy one. We all fly in from all over the states and interact intimately with latinas. They are not immune to our colds and flus and vice versa.

While we are down there... we drink and eat like shit (as do they) and our immune systems are weakened.

This last trip... I took an airbourne every morning and I feel fine upon return. On previous trips, I did nothing and usually came back home with a nasty cold and cough.

Contrary to ancient beliefs... The cold and flu virus thrives in warm tempuratures, not in cold temperatures. We get sick in the winter, because we don't get fresh air and are stuck inside small warm environments.

I met some newbies on this trip who were REALLY concerned about STDs. I told them that if they wrapped their rascals, their biggest threat was a nasty cold. This advice is from experience.

Also, most of them have little K*ds at home of their own or extended families and you know how it is when there are little K*ds around, they're always sick with a cold or ear infection or cough.

Good point CT, since I caught a bug from a Tica last year, I now always pay attention during my interview if a chica is coughing, has a runny nose, etc... Sometimes I'll just ask if they have the gripe, if so ~ NEXT! :P It's NO fun being sick in CR.

Help me out with Spanish... Instead of gripa... I think you have to ask "Tienes resfriado??" I doubt these girls would work with the flu. Hell... you can get out of bed with the flu. They WILL work with a cold. I think that is resfriado.

I always use "Tienes enferma" (are you sick?). Should I be using the word "gripa" or "resfriada/o" ?? :?:

?Estas enferma? (Are you sick?)
?Tienes un resfriado? (Do you have a cold?)
?Tienes la gripe? (Do you have a bug/flu?)
