I would not count to heavily on that. The issue before the court is not on the merits of the legislation but rather on what percentage of the legislators necessary for passage, a simple majority or some greater percentage.

Other than that I generally agree with your comments. As I emphasized in my previous post there are a lot of variables being left to the politicians.

God, I just think they are opening a Pandora's Box and not thinking about the ramifications. Hate to be negative, but it is typical Costa Rica. Always shooting itself in the foot. I am not taking it lightly though.

Indeed, the big IF ... you know, I really like CR as a country not just a playground. But from what I have seen and experienced over the years, I would say that the locals will still be getting screwed ( no pun intended here ) Mind you, I am still hoping the best will turn out for all, both foreigners and ticos.

This will be my last post on this subject as apparently some board members are offended when I write negatively about Costa Rica or promote the positives of Panama. One public response to Thirdworlds question on Panama banks which I think is appropriate to this thread and discussion. Can Americans walk in and open an account in one of 115+ Panama banks? The answer is yes...but it will require MUCH paperwork...most banks requiring 2 bank references, 2 personal or commercial references, 2 forms of ID, local references, and a few other things potentially. Some banks will only open savings accounts for foreigners, not checking. With our US governments pressures worldwide, they have basically made us suspected criminals in most offshore venues with using money laundering and terrorism propoganda to make it more difficult for Americans to move their money out of the USA. While I support pursuing criminals and terrorists, I dont appreciate the blanket suspicion of any american who wants to finance and bank outside the US. Not constitutional in my opinion...but thats the last you'll hear of it here. The best way to setup in Panama is through a good and qualified attorney to basically represent your interests. Dont worry...I'm not one...so you cant call this touting...

Am still back and forth to CR every few weeks...so hope to catch up with some CRT brethren there in the near future. After all, it is STILL monger heaven even if not as easy to live there as it once was.

Anything other than the above and Costa Rica wouldn't be Costa Rica!

So what if more Americans do not invest in Costa Rica - do we really want more Americans in Costa Rica?

Do we really want good roads to attract yet more Americans to CR? I'm hoping the roads remain really really really bad!!!! I'm actually hoping that they get worse than they are right now. I want Americans to visit Costa Rica and come back saying, "the rain forest was great, the country side is beautiful lush green, the roads suck, SJ is a dump, the food isn't much to speak about, I'd visit again but I'd never ever ever ever live there!"

If this new tax turns Americans off Costa Rica and thus Costa Rica is shooting itself in the foot, I'm all for it! I don't want Costa Rica to change for the better.

That's indeed another way of looking at it, interesting and yet very valid from your POV.

In all reality the wealthy Ticos ( The Dons) also live here.In Manhattan,Scarsdale,Malibu,La Jolla ,San Clemente ,Vegas, Miami , Palo Alto ,etc . Thier K*ds go to school at USC , Yale , UM, Stanford , etc.
I've met them, seen thier passports, issued them markers, and at times gone out with them to party here in Vegas after work.

The women are just as hot in Panama. I was there in the eighties at Rodman . Basically the same tribe it seems to me as costa Rica especially in the North.

We've turned hectares of land ticos wouldnt buy for a few hundred thousand colones into multi million dollar parcels.

Next will be, yes you got it Mucho property taxes. Imagine this a coffee plantation , finca , or rancho that generates a pittance , now gringo paradise condos that generate untold wealth in PROPERTY Taxes.

Still the real problems wont come until the next generation of Ticos who are students now realize they cant afford to buy property in thier own country because foreign money has unrealistically inflated
the prices so high. Id say around the Mayan calendars 2012.

Still a fun place for the Romans , Vikings, Mongols , British and Americans to go and have some fun.

Hey LVSteve why dont you follow tman down there and rent your place in San Jose as a monger haven like Casa Vino or Jackson does with his apartment in Recoleta.You could probably make a killing.

Not a bad idea, Cal. As a matter of fact, I Am making my first trip to Panama Mar. 15th to check out the possibilities. Imigration here is getting to the point that its a real ordeal getting it - and once you go through the year long nightmare, you have to do it again every two years.
