Try the search function, under sexual health. This has been discussed often. In short, just about any pharmacy carrries all the fun sexual vitamins without a scrip....

You might also ask for the generic version. Widely available and cheaper than V.

Dear Lazy-ass, who won't use the Search function... :P

Yeah, you can get Viagra and everything else usually without a prescription. However, according to one MD with whom I spoke, this is about to change. Pressure from the medical profession within and outside Costa Rica may prompt more vigorous enforcement of existing prescription laws.

I would advise that you find a pharmacy outside the Gulch to save money. I was shocked when the pharmacist at Farmacia Balmoral immediately across avenida Central from Hotel Presidente told us the price: $25.00 per single 100 mg. tablet. Thats twice the U.S. retail price. OTOH, Farmacia Italiana was offering real Pfizer Viagra for around $10.00/tablet. Shop for best prices. And for Pete's sake, use the search function on this site. This has been discussed here quite often. Enjoy, and welcome to CRT! :D

I guess the app won't let Admin make it a GIANT BUTTON at the top of the screen.

hahahahaha....I remember one member (me I think) that was asking if the rooms at the Presidente had windows.......

(I think I was too afraid to voice my concerns as to whether the rooms also had 'doors')

anyway, the poor Admin had to step in and assure everyone that indeed the rooms had windows and doors.....

it's all good....and I wouldn't feel bad about El Ciego's good natured ribbing....El C not only christened me "Asshole Johnny" but then coached all the little darlings, street urchins and fruit vendors to call out "Hola, Assholito Juancito" everytime I walked about.....

That is an interesting comment. This MD you spoke with was he in the US or in CR? Are you saying that current CR law is being violated by the farmacias dispensing V,C & L without benefit of a prescription?

I am interested because quite frankly I have not heard a whisper of anything that would lead me to believe that major changes are coming in regards to dispensing of drugs in Costa Rica. Frankly I find it hard to believe that such a significant change would take place without debate.

Any further info you might have would certainly be appreciated. Has anyone else heard a similar rumor?

Irish Drifter,

the doctor who made the comment is Costa Rican and was practicing in Dominical. I had stopped in to get some painkillers after tearing up my Achilles tendon on some beach rocks in Dominical.

When I commented about drugs such as Cialis being available without prescription, the doc (who incidentally attended medical school in Houston) corrected me, saying that the pharmacies are supposed to have MD-written prescriptions for most drugs, including Cialis. He told me that most pharmacies don't worry about these regulations, as pharmacists enjoy more freedom and professional regard in Costa Rica than they do in the U.S. Also, many ticos cannot afford both the doctor's office visit and the prescriptions; as a matter of practicality therefore, the pharmacist is a first-line medical provider and is free to dispense most prescription drugs without legal hassle. Dr. Gomez A. further said that an attempt was being made to make some drugs harder to acquire without prescription. So, while I'm not qualified to report on the letter of the Costa Rican laws, I understood that pharmacists are "technically" violating the law, but these laws are seldom if ever enforced.

The doc with whom I spoke and I had this conversation in perfect English, by the way. I know I didn't misunderstand him. From further discussion, I got the idea that the attempt to enforce the laws has to do with income concerns from the physicians, and with concerns about narcotic pain relievers such as Oxycontin, tranquilizers such as Valium and other drugs which are more rigorously controlled in the U.S .

El Ciego,

Many thanks for that info. I will ask my Doctor for his take on that next visit which is not until March 30. Will report back then.

For the record........concerns about narcotic pain relievers such as Oxycontin, tranquilizers such as Valium and other drugs which are more rigorously controlled in the U.S ..... these drugs do require a prescription in Costa Rica currently. The law however may not be being enforced.

Besides the usual 'pecker pills', I have bought many different types of drugs/antibiotics, for myself and/or friends back home. I've purchased Lortabs, Amoxycillin, Biaxin XL, Lipitor, Valium, Hydrocodone, Chlorotrimeton, Prozac and various muscle relaxers in farmacia's throughout CR, and have never been questioned whether or not I had a scrip for said drugs.

The only thing that I couldn't buy (without scrip) was morphine. A neighbor of mine has Loopiss (sp) disease, and she asked me to try to get her some of her medicines in CR. She wrote them down on paper, and I gave them to a chemist in a farmacia in Flamingo. Even though this chemist is a friend of mine, he said that he could not give me the morphine medicine. Other than that, I've never had a problem with just about anything in the farmacia's. YMMV.

When I inquired about purchasing some "V" at Farmacia Italian in 2004 the pharmacist said he would have to charge me (something like $10) for a "consultation" for the prescription.

He seemed very sincere and almost apologetic that he had to add this charge. Make of it what you will.
